WTB: Character EQ for tracking - EQ Chandler Germ, GR EQ-1NV

Postby Mixed_Messages » Sun Mar 03, 2013 2:03 pm

Hi All, I am looking for an EQ / Tone Control to go with my Empirical Labs EL9 to be used for tracking.. It must shine on bass.. I want something that can do what plugs can't. I am looking for a character type box that can bring some vibe to whatever I pass through it. The Chandler Germanium Tone Control sounds like the most fun I can find but have not used it. Any decent parametric EQ would be considered though. Hit me up if you have something you want to sell that you think I may be interested in.

The ADM eqs in this listing are worth a look, stepped switches for recall, inductor eq with transformers, lots of frequencies and plenty of 70s tone. I've had 2 or 3 pairs of these and they're excellent for a wide range of scenarios and are way cheaper than a chandler unit...

If you're looking for some ADM 1540 EQ's send me a PM.

Here's some info:

ADM 1540 Equaliser.

These modules were manufactured in 1980 by Audio Design Manufacturing.

They are 4 band inductors based reciprocal equalisers with precision switched gain settings and frequency selection.

11 position Grayhill dual concentric switches provide 2, 4, 6, 9 & 12db of boost or cut at the following frequencies.

LF: 40, 80, 100 Hz Shelving

ML: 200, 350, 560, 900 Hz Peak & Dip

MH: 1.5, 2.5, 4.3, 7.2 kHz Peak & Dip

HF: 10, 12.5, 15 kHz Shelving

Require a dual rail 20 volt supply. Rob or Joe Malone (JLM) can rack them up for you or can sell you the power supply to suit if you're into DIY.

Edge connector and schematics included.

These are nice EQ's from the 80's, engraved face plates, high quality components and built like a tank. Think API or Quad 8.

Here's a pic.

Thanks Greg, is the ADM like a 500 series module ? I would rather a 19" rack mount style unit but will wait and see what else comes along before ruling it out..

That Clariphonic does look nice but I think it is more of a mastering type tool rather than a single channel tracking EQ like I want/need..

Cheers,
Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

The ADM's are a modular unit but not compatible with the 500 series.

2 of then can be fitted in a 1 RU rack case. I think Rob Squire or Joe Malone has racked them up for clients.

Thanks

Hi Jeremy,

budget constraints? I have something but suspect it may be a bit too pricey and is dual channel ....

Fess up Dale - you know I'm a sucker when it comes to tube eqs...

(Caveat: I have no cash and have been threatened with divorce if I buy any more toys... although I seem to have gotten away with the Avalon I just bought).

I don't really have a budget in mind.. I just want to see what people have and take it from there.. A Pultec clone could be nice.. I haven't used any decent hardware eqs.. I just have to rely on what I read in various forums as to whether it would be what I want.. Something like a Speck seems to be a good entry level piece but doesn't seem to add much more than I can get with a plugin.. I want something that inspires me when playing my bass/ guitar or whatever I am tracking.. Something that helps bring out different flavours from the same source.. If I am tracking lead and backing vox, a way of making them sound different beyond just using a different mic.. Clinical/ surgical type stuff isn't what I am after. That is the one thing computers do OK. I hope I am not sounding unqualified or like a newbie..

I have a racked pair of Neve 51 / V series EQs available.
All transformer in and out, four sweepable bands.

The Neves are great EQ's - I carry a pair into every tracking session and the assistants and other engineers jaws hit the floor when they hear what you can do with them on kick - and toms - also killer on vocals, acoustics, brass, strings, overheads - you name it.
