Hey everyone, I just uploaded a track to "the recording project" Downunder page, just looking for a few comments on the mix, as in if you guys think the balance and eq are up to scratch, been working on this project too long, need some fresh perspective.

I think it's pretty good but..... I'll leave that up to you guys to say.

Also do you think the girl has what it takes to get some airplay. Still wondering whether to get it mastered or not.

I agree with Kurt about the main vox, prob need a bit more centralising :) The mix is good though....however, the probz i have with it are more to do with the instrumental production.....

Prob turn up that male rap vocal as welll, try and make it more BAM in your face...possibly compress it harder, or turn it up in the mix.

first comment on that would be the electric piano....are u able to render that from a different VST? it screams 80's 90's pop...that said, alot of modern rnb and rap has heaps of ooolllld daggy synth, and boops... either re-render that with a more modern piano sound...or crank the bass and compression in the piano, it sounds a little thin to me.

The main vocal is pretty catchy and good, i reckon its a fair gamble to get this mastered.

If you're considering going pro with it, i would consider having a look at the drums....they need maybe more modern samples? (something more like kick/rim sound thats been getting heaps of club play) and perhaps replace the bass heavy kicks with a thinner kick, BUT add plenty of regular bass drops for all those car systems. Same with the bass guitar, probably thin that out a bit, and add some nutjob bass drops...

If u cant be stuffed going over the instrumental again, i would look at thickening up that "clap" snare...make it alot more aggressive, and fatter, maybe Distress it, and double it with an octave down version..

i know my critiquing is damn random...but to recap...if you can get more modern samples for that piano, more modern kick/snare sounds....+ thin out the kick/bass to make room for low ass bass drops....that track would be sick...

if you need samples....of any sort, let me know man....i've got VST libraries up to my ears :)

With no PC in the studio atm, I tried listening upstairs on "sub low end" 'puter speakers.....eeeeewwwww. My first impression (the one before I thought the speakers were crap) was directed at the singer and her style and it left me feeling "oh, another one of those" but hell, what do I know. I'm just a cynical old bastard longing to see some new (local) talent that actually exudes true class and ability..............you know, the type that won't be fodder for the (pre)teen masses.

No I'm not screwing with instruments these are the tracks I was given to mix, so the instruments stay, C'mon JK the compression was what I was trying to hold back on, hehe. But yes I do agree, I said this to the producer at the start, that the instruments sound a touch dated. Dunno yet about more compression. The piano is from a korg triton, I hate the pianos in the triton.

Yeah I might beef a few things up a little. Maybe I'll drop in some chords over the piano, to fatten it up. Bringing the vox into centre a little should'nt hurt and boosting the male vox a db or 2 should be good too.

It is squarely aimed right where you mentioned Chris, straight at the teens, right between the eyes.

In the end this is a demo, but it looks like its gonna end up pretty good. You just never know.

Her name is "Aruna", calls herself "Miss Love". Still reckon she should just call herself "Aruna".

i didnt know whether u wrote the instrumental or not...so i thought i'd comment anyway...

i usually hear with rnb, the vox are very compressed, generally as part of the style....usually in other music, like progressive rock, ambient music, more "live" performed stuff, i'd be on the "easy on the compression" train too....

as a mix though, it sounds sweet....just the vocals in the centre, and up that male vocal would be the only mix things...and that "snare" sound slightly fattned up...other than that, sweet as.

Cheers Martin, yeah I agree on the instruments 100% but........sometimes we just have to work with what we've got, whenever I make electro or hiphop beats though the sound I achieve is very smooth and fluid, way bigger and meatier. Though the guy who produced this track "Big Tim" is good at production his instrument choices could be better sometimes. These instruments sort of are "his sound" though.

Anyway I'll boost the male vox and centralise the female vox a little more, there were no widening tools used just panning, the mic was a blue kiwi compressed with api 525's and eq'ed with an avalon ad2055. The kiwis are a big sounding mic, sound huge when panned way out, they fill the room. So maybe I went a touch too far, haha.

Hey Tim, he hired them for the day, clip cost him $10,000 all up, said the day he got to select the girls was one of the happiest days of his life.

Oh yeah he's got plenty to say and say loud without shame,haha , he's a great bloke though. But yeah his tracks are pretty hard hitting.
