I've never had the pleasure. I always just want the performance right. But this is just amazing and I'll probably buy it. I can see so many uses. I may even rewrite some old classic recordings. I wonder how it will go with electric guitars and all those harmonic overtones.

I got an email last night from Celemony. The Melodyne plugin 2 will be the first update released. To upgrade from my version plugin will be $129 US. Sound like it's too good to pass up

even in my world where that is the last thing i would ever want to do to a recording, i am left wondering how the hell it works... wow is the certainly the word ,
but then i suddenly remembered that i still dont know or understand how they get the little people into my television set every time i turn it on :)

its clear there are people out there much smarter then anybody ever needed to be.

I saw it today demoed at Sounddevices it blew me away. I made my order straight away, just have wait 6 months, geeeee.

I've used melodyne a few times, on this RNB track I mixed the girl sang the vox all quite nicely but added no 5ths or 7ths in the harmony tracks, fixed that with melodyne, just picked the phrases I thought should be moved up and it did it with great effect. Sounded spot on.

The new 1 I hav'nt checked out yet, but will.

Yeah well thats a pretty awesome piece of software. My favourite part was the sampling capabilities, recording a chord from outstandingly high quality instruments and then separating the notes and being able to play them in realtime is incredible.

Ok guys who's got all the expensive guitars and other stringed instruments? Rick, Kris fellas where are you? Haha.

Hmmmm now when are we going to be able to type in lyrics and have melodyne sing it for us???

All the lawyers take note... it does raise an interesting question, or rather takes a previously raised question further...

"At what point to samples, once processed, lose their previous legal owner."

Lets say that I have recorded a really lush string motif, and someone samples the recording, but uses Melodyne to alter the melody and rhythm.
Does the effort that you have gone to in getting those sounds, have any kind of i.p. rights as well as the actually mechanicals of the song.

And a practical question, how do you prove a melody was a sample that had been altered, and not a new recording?

I don't think it can extract an instrument from a mix. Notice how the samples are clean instruments? I think if it could do the extraction thing that would be fairly significant and worthy of mention in the demo video.

fair point re extraction but for sample / song analysis perhaps all you'd need is a tool that could scan for a particular arrangement of notes (e.g. horn line) out of a complex polyphonic source (mix). It looks like this could be done now but perhaps a mix would get too complicated for the software to process. Just thinking out loud about where the technology might end up.

crikey!

20 years ago i used to teach electronic music and i distinctly remember telling my students that doing something like this would be impossible....now i'm going to have to find them all and tell them i was wrong....actually i reckon there would be quite a few things i could confess to being wrong about whilst i'm at it.

still....it would be interesting to see how it performs with a real world instrument take...with finger squeaks, reverb, soundboard thumps and all the usual noises that make up a lot of instrumental recordings.
