If memory serves it has two settings - 1.8 sec and 1.33 seconds, equal to 1 turn each of a 33.3 rpm and 45 rpm disc respectively!

Pardon my ignoramusness, but why would you use a delay on a cutting lathe? (I know SFA about pressing vinyl, we've always just sent it off)

Well, the cutting lathe needs to know what program is coming up so that the groove spacing can be adjusted accordingly. This used to be accomplished by having extra play heads on the replay tapedeck. The gap between the "pre-listen" heads and the "program" heads could be adjusted by looping the tape around different rollers between the two heads, to allow for different combinations of tape speed and disc rpm. When digital sources first became available there was no method to provide a "pre-listen" output to control the lathe, so it was usually done by doing a listening pass of the program and making notes so the lathe could be "driven" manually. Later on the Sony DDU series of delays became available so that the un-delayed output could be used to drive the lathe pre-listen circuits, while the delayed output became the program feed to the cutting chain. The delay did not affect the quality of the program because it was already 44k1/16bit coming from the 1610 or 1630 processor, but for the same reason they're pretty useless these days.

Thanks for the explanation Otto, makes sense. So I guess tha means that all later vinyls were actually vinyl pressings of a 16bit 44.1K recording....

later ...? yes as in from say 1985 onwards and i would say from 1988 everything bar the specially mentioned audiophile type releases ,
we used to make or get from overseasd an eqd 1603 of the analog tapes and then cut fron that that we thoughtit was magaic way betterthen cutting from a 1/4" dolby A eqd copy of the masters ~
