How to mic a guitar cab

Here is a configuration seen in use at a music festival. The sound guy
said "he liked the sound of the smaller speakers on top, because they
were brighter and sounded good when blended in with the larger speakers
below...."

That's a great idea. You should have told him to place the mic at the rear of the head to warm up the sound a bit.

Okay, we've had the laugh, but what would that top mic be picking up? Amp noises if any ... maybe some ambient spill coming up from the back of the stack and bouncing around? Presumably a bassy sort of thump sound from the front of the stack? Roadie farts?

Can anyone suggest a way in which that mic might pick up anything usable?

Oh, and despite my appalling ignorance in many areas of sound engineering, that wasn't me, in case you''re wondering.

if that mic was picking up anything good, it would have been a "less harsh" sound coming from the cab...

would have taken time to put it in phase with the other mic he's got there....

but generally, mics placed in random places in a room give boomy, big and loose sounds....i dunno if that goes for a mic placed right next to a head!?

when recording a while ago....i was walking around the room, and with my ears, noticed that the really loud stack we were recording sounded beefy and massive from behind a baffle....

i dunno if that experience has anything to do with why that dude miced that amp rig the way he did....

I doubt it would be a usable sound, but he also has a 906 or 609 or whatever they're called on the cab. Maybe he pulls the two up together and doesn't notice there's nothing good on one of them!

No no the guy was an egg because he liked the speaker in the amp head or he is obviously an attention seeker, I can see that now, he did it on purpose. Maybe there's a penis thing going on here. But really i think I'll do the same from here on just to keep people talking about it.
Anyway how did the mix sound out in the front of house?
Did he mic-up the drummer's balls, should get a reasonable snare sound from there?

This was sent to me by a friend, so I didn't get to hear how the sound was improved by this 21 century technique. I hope someone let him down gently.... nuh, I don't.

I'm sure i've seen this picture, or a very similar picture on another forum... but from memory, both mic's were the same, unlike this picture.

I was under the impression that it was showing off a mic clip or adapter that clipped onto the top of the speaker, so you could mic up a stack (With another speaker on top)

But the picture got taken out of context, then spread over the net.

Then there is a version of that same picture with the bottom mic photoshopped out, so it looks like only the amp is mic'd up.
