JLM TG preamps

guys, seriously....

if u want something phat...check these out....they are nothing short of insane.

sure, might not have that much experience as an engineer, but....i've never heard 1 track of guitars sound as big as the guitars i tracked today :)

no, joes not paying me :P

continuous impedance control from 200 to 3K...and input/output gain and trim....make for some serious tonal options !!

if you're still not convinced, the clients dont lie....mine were breathless after hearing the raw tracks we did

Oh don't forget to pull the trim knob out, it lets you drive the amp harder without overloading the output.

hey nik.

the quad eights were there for backup :) incase i wanted to eq :P

i will be overdubbing tomoro and the day after, so...will be eqing sounds to gel a bit more..

the raw sounds with the TG blew me away though :)

(dont be so hard on the 99v's, they're a bit lighter sounding, which can be good, they have a silky quality too, which is different to the TG's massiveness) on the other hand, 2 TG's....would be sweet !!

oh, and thanks Joe for a kick ass pre, made in aus!

ps, the trim knob on the TG is on -70 or something :P

i am driving the bezeezus out of this thing...my wave forms are still dynamic though !!

Yeah they are a great pre, thick and fat sounding, perfect for electric guitar. The JLM's are the only 500 pres I've heard that stand up next to the mercury pre's. Nic and I have tested quite a few against it and the JLM's always sound great.

when we (nic, heath and i) tested the JLMs against the Mercury i honestly couldn't tell the difference between the TG500 and the Mercury when tracking an acoustic mic'd up with a 451

I'm thinking of tracking vocals with the TG500 next time, especially with thin/bright sounding mics.....make them sound fat.

The M72 is beautiful thing that for sure, but twice the price of a JLM.

I'm still working on it but so far I like, very accurate mic, what you hear is what you get...... probably going to be great on grand piano which is mainly what I want it for, pretty bright sounding mic.

here's the unmixed instrumentals i recorded with the TG preamp...

DI bass into an Avalon U5

and guitars from a Dual Recto, into a Palmer Speaker Sim into the JLM TG Preamp followed by the JLM PEQs

atm totally unmixed and unedited with scratch vocals

Hello

I very rarely post in audio forums and am very new here.

I would like to thank nIC for showing me the way to TURTLE ROCK.
The people i have been dealing with here are very nice and easygoing indeed. Its a refreshing change.

I just wanted to give a big +1 for the TG pre. I have had a lunch box with 4 of them and 2 PEQ's for quite some time now.
Joe is quite a piece of work (genius really) and his product is world class to say the least.

I have traveled my lunch box round the world a couple of times using it for live work and it has never missed a beat. I have tried many different mic pre's over the years from SSL to neve and everything in between the TG remains my favorite. Having said that i have never heard the 99V.

The TG on acoustic guitar is an amazing thing to hear when doing in-ear monitoring seems to give real girth and space to my sound.
I also use them on bass with the PEQ for general shaping this is a killer combination that to be honest just sounds good on everything to me.

I use this chain at home with a VMA which seems to be the best combination i can find for that microphone just seems to work.
I am sorry i don't have samples to offer or anything along those lines but if your in Brisbane and would like to hear them feel free to drop me an email you can plug your favorite mic in to them and hear it though the JLM headphone mixer.
I have many nice pre's and channel strips but my JLM lunch box is one that i could never part with.
