Post-Production scene in Victoria

Postby tonymite » Mon Sep 08, 2008 2:43 pm

Anyone know what the post-production scene is like in Victoria?

What type of facilities are in demand?
Are the rooms required to be a specific size ? ( I had someone mention THX )
How important is a booth for Foley / ADR
Any bits of gear that a re considered ' standard ' like ProStools & Control 24 ( Maybe my 02R can still cut the mustard ??)

I have a space approx 4 m x 3 m that I'm looking to make use of .. unless I convert one of my 9 m x 7 m to be a post facility

your kidding yourself tony
post is more cutthroat then a guy like you ( or me for that matter ) can handle
like most things it looks simple - free money not much gear
small rooms

then you find out its a case of not "what you've got but who you know"
in the world of sound for picture you would make a great fence builder

for your reference one of the leading post houses in Sydney records foley for blockbuster films with a 416 , they also have a neuman, plug both into a presonus pre...and hit record. its no where near as impressive as music production facilities thats for sure.

ps. on the topic of THX.

im pretty sure that THX systems are only fitted in Theatre sized rooms...meaning that if the room doesnt look like Greater Unionw but with all the seats taken out, its probably not gonna happen :P

a 9X7 meter room could probably be big enough, but i dont think it has the height, not to mention you'll only be able to mix in that room...

For the front room:
What if i put like a " cone of silence - condom " over the equipment and when not in use - doubles up as tracking room ??

This post idea was a from a friend when he came to check it out for the 1st time.. just something to consider ... I'm still trying to get my head around the Neve vs SSL mixbus debate ...

that could work if you were tracking foley for Ansell ads...

foley actors tip toeing on Latex..that would be a funny noise.

Film audio people are weirdos, though could have been fun in the old days before terra byte sample libraries.

Getting your hands dirty would have been half the fun, beneficial for the perks of the job too. Hmmmm we need a fart noise, simple head down to China Town for a feed of duck and 1/2 hour later get the mic ready and hit record.

Car noises, hmmmm head down to a carpark and drop some burnouts.

These days you can sit there sip your latte and drive yourself mad listening to 1000 different screecheez looking for the right 1.

Yep I'd want at least $700 a day to do that too.

Height is apprx 6 m - even then .. it'll be reduced to like 4.5 m once room is finalaised.

That's what I was refering to ... is a certified "THX" theatre sized room an absolute must ?

Apparently one of Sing-Sing's rooms is booked solid by the Docklands film studio ..

I'm trying to find an actual purpouse for a post room - whether it's in a squash court 10 x 7 m or in a smaller room say 4.5 x 3.5 m ( 3 m high) ...

Tony, i think THX is a must for a blockbuster film mix, routinely actual film mixes for THX certified theatres apparently dont get mastered, becauase all THX theatres are specced out identically. Rick, perhaps you can comfirm or smash this ...

so, im imagining a Post room in your situation would be geared to the smaller guys, which imo will be an exercise in slow torture....receiving payment that is...independant film budgets (sound department) are worse than musicians when it comes to lack of $$.

The only THX certified rooms I know of are FOX / Soundfirm in NSW.
There are heaps of post-production facilitis in South Melbourne for instance .. other than Blockbusters ... what other work goes on .. Advertising , games, what not ... ??

Just planning ahead ... Precession of the Equinox n that :))

to get thx certifcation , you send your room plans into thx ( any size room is considered) then you send in your air con plans , then you send in your equipment spec , then they ask you for thirty thousand dollars to start the process ( err. thats the bit where i jumped off the thx boat) .
then they review, audit and confirm your room will meet thx specs you buy a few of there volume contollers and what ever they think you will need to comply then you pay a licence fee every year to use the thx brand .

they have a small room and a big room spec
the 30 k was still the current start fee last time i checked (a few years ago) fees may have changed but the process is the same

both my big room and my little room met the thx specs easily , but my bank balance was not so easily convinced

i am doing an acoustic installation err actually thats a reinstall job for one of the biggest and busiest post places in the country as we speak... you watch the stuff they do on tele every night and it is so far from being able to meet thx specs i think you could leave the squash courts as is and have a better shot at the title
the rooms are smaller then your hallway and the ceiling are lower then a sound engineers bank balance
of course its my job to fix the mess for the post guys , somebody else got paid mega bucks to create it :)

The facility my room is part of have 3 other rooms doing predominantly advertising post. Sure there are smaller places running on less gear, but you're kidding yourself if you think it's a cheap way out. They run Fairlight Zynergies in each room plus a Constellation console in the big room and Protools alongside the Fairlight in studio 1. Martin is in our Sydney studio so he can fill you in on that end. They also spend on immaculate presentation of the facility and rooms, client entertainment, promotion, staff to service the advertising clients and a bazillion other things. At the upper end it is a matter of keeping up with the Jonses as well as doing extremely good work. Oh yeah, and the 8 am starts.
Film people on the other hand, are nuts. If you think music people are insecure and unstable get ready for a mind altering experience :) As for indy films...just don't go there....they end up costing money to work on.
If it were me I'd get into dialogue or sfx editing. Hardly anybody ever comes to the place for it and you could get away with keeping things low key. Nothing like working in your undies. Good luck with it.
Cheers

Hey guys,

here's a layout for Post Production room I've planned for upstairs bathroom.

Minimal structual changes - ie: working with what I've got.

( sorry- couch isnt displayed in opposite corner to 02R / desk / workstation ).

How would YOU do it?

Any comments/suggestions appreciated.

Peace !

Thank's Kurt - as I said .. dumbass...

Would symetry ( stereo image ) be more critical than line of sight ... like ... maybe face the wall as per original layout and just have a webcam type setup for the vocal/ISO booth?

Can anyone think of something I've missed ??

... drum roll .... HARRY ....errmm.. drum roll .... HARRY ... ??

Rick - you know that fantasy is always better than reality .. you can never fukitup :)

I've changed PA's and have to give her time to adjust to my hectic schedule and she can hardly keep up - her trial period expires this week and if she hasn't settled in, I'll give it a rest to focus on perfecting the Romanian panflute 'till I can find someone to put a 9mm against my head.

As Delta once said:

" I was born to try "

but Yoda said that there is no try ... go figure..
