I dunno I reckon Jamil may produced the best rock epic of the year, heh. 12 mins 7 secs and it's good the whole way through. Got all the good bit's, big guitar solo, some good vocal range and killer riffs and a pretty solid drummer.

Haha now you gotta learn to do it live. :)

Anyway I hav'nt heard any other TurtleRock epics this year so I probably dunno what the hell I'm on about, but Jamil and his band have written a great record, I think anyway. You know everyones probably gonna want to hear clips now Jamil, heh.

But where is he goina sell it. Record companies want you to do everything these days and when you start making it they may pick you up after you do all the hard yards.
Warning to bands: get a real job, save up $50k, record, promote and get out on the road all over Australia to build up a big following then do it over and over again.
Art for art sake because there may not be a future as a full time career with a great income at the end of your input.

Yeah I'll be there too, we are doing final mixdowns tomorrow. I always learn something from Rick. Was the first rock album I've worked on in ages so it was a breath of fresh air to help on such a good one.

The 12 minute track "Tigers Nest" just starts so unobtrusively with a sythy harmonica type sound and a few cymbals, then just kicks in and draws you in slowly, like a big joint lol. Intelligent lyrics and a great vocal melody, then just seems to travel into different moods, some of the changes are killer and very emotive. There is space and tonnes of atmosphere, I dunno I just really like it.

I guess it's not perfect, I think the bass guit is lacking a bit but not badly enough to be really annoying, also we had to do the instrumentals before the vox were done (due to knocking my house down) so we sort of had to make the vox fit, we left space in the freq content for them but still was a lttle difficult. Anyway it did work out ok, still not perfect but good. The U47 he used sounded superb on the higher spl vox but was a lil muffled on the quieter bits.

Nics purple mc77 and tracker on vox helped heaps, Nics a legend. Also I think everone should have a pair of those little ANT eq's I've got, they got used on nearly everything on this record except vox which we used the Nuemanns dunno if it was the best choice but eh it worked ok. Love em, great eq's.

Overall I think the album sounds classic big 70's rock and modern at the same time, with even tribal world stuff in there. The whole album sounds like a journey, rare these days, something you can just put on and listen the whole way through.

Can't wait to here it finished as well, break out the lava lamps Rick :) .

sounds like a concept album - I'm a big fan of concept albums when done right...

These days most of the time its just a bunch of songs chucked together with no more thought than that...

Yeah the term "concept album" can have a wide variety of definitions...

You've got your old school alice cooper albums like alice cooper "goes to hell" where the whole album is about his judgement and journey to hell and eventually escaping, then you've got your more loosely based concept albums where a certain emotion or theme is applied but most people may not notice (can't think of a really good example but fear factory springs to mind) and everything in between...

Well, a great start, but if you go chronolgical try (but some of my fav's);
This Was, Minstrel in the Gallery, Songs from the Wood, Heavy Horses, Stormwatch
Thick As A Brick and Aqualung were the "concept" albums.. but there are others also.
Crest of a Knave and Rock Island has alot more modern production (synths, sampled drums, programming, etc) but were also cool.
Anyway, there's a start..

Flower Travellin' Band and their breakthrough album Satori. theyre nutty...but its proof that being out of key on vocals and even guitar doesnt matter if your songs are way cool, hehe

and another band, from finland, Kingston Wall....really friggin cool shit

There's some really innovative stuff in some of the recording techniques, and a whole lot of pain went into the mixing. But I'm with those who say 90% or more is in the passion, technique and talent of the band, and this is where the album really passes muster. JK's got hisself a good band together, and there's not a bad or filler track on the album.
