OMF compatibility...

Postby jkhuri44 » Sun Nov 16, 2008 6:14 pm

Gday yall,

just wondering if anyone's had any experience tracking on a Protools rig (using the playlist function)...then gone on to save the session as an OMF and opened the OMF in Cubase? do the playlist takes register as stacked audio files on the same track in cubase...or is the last take in the Protools session kept when the OMF is imported?

Just going into a studio using an HD rig, and wanna make sure the project will be cool to take back home :)

i've only ever used OMFs in film soundtrack work, and they usually dont use protools playlists...

I think if you have the MP/DV Toolkit allows the cross compatibility and import functions (but I'd check first)

Can't confirm if you are mentally unstable or not - best leave that to a psychiatrist lol.

As for the OMF thing i think if you can get it to work you still need a backup plan - it's unreliable enough as it is without even considering mutiple takes.

yeah, VU...i've never liked OMFs :( its just cheaper if i can record all my shit, then piss off and comp it at home...

obviously thats not gonna be the case,,,hehe...

I suppose if PT records Broadcast waves, which im not sure it does...can anyone confirm...i suppose i can just import all audio, then stack it myself in cubase.

hey tim,

the post is about recording a session in Protools HD, or even LE, using protools playlists function to record multiple takes, then exporting an OMF.

Then importing that OMF in Cubase....i was wondering if all those takes stay in tact when i open the OMF back in cubase...will the takes in playlists register as Stacked audio in cubase, or will the takes just appear in my pool.

If I was gonna open up the session in PT there's no issue, playlists are always compatible in HD to LE and LE to HD.

spose this question is for anyone that usually uses Nuendo or cubase, and uses OMF's

gday angus,

yeah, the problem is...usually after tracking, i dont have time, or rather, the band doesnt have more money to comp in the expensive studio....

it seems im going to have to just re assemble sessions using Import ....hope to got the broadcast wave tagging works...

and comp from there.

not sure how helpful this is jamil but i often have to export OMFs out of tools and onto fairlight and whatever else, it works PERFECTLY as far as location of the regions and track count and stuff like that, as for playlists to be honest its mostly post stuff so rather than playlist anything i just add another track, if you can record that way, and dont have a track limit on cubase, then it will work for you fine...

either that or just go through each playlist, consolidate it from start (zero) to finish then export them out quickly and line them up at zero on your session at home

big file sizes etc but its relatively clean, just name them so you remember what they are :D

hey martin,

yeah, ihave no problem as far as simple OMF's go, i use them for post in video alot with no hassles..

i've just never opened up...for example a session i've done in HD....with multitracked groups use playlists....a good example would be several takes spliced together on a tracking day for drums...

or...1 track of vocals with a few different edits...and the thing is...sometimes i dont wanna render from zero...a) it would take too much time for the vocal comps and then the 20 instrumental tracks X 6 songs + i want to review my on the spot edits...

hence asking about the playlist thing from PT to cubase

Try posting on the Cubase forum JK - someone there might have an easier way for you. Worth a try..
Sounds like you are going to have to consolidate and export the wavs and line 'em up..

done...

then all i have to do is insert all my tracks in cubase, and tell the import function to line up to origin (place where recording began)....

you get tracks overlapping, but thats how it werks in cubase..

then the only pain the bum left is to put each of the audio files on the correct track..

but there's hope!
