Who uses Logic?

And what do you think of the audio engine? I have used Nuendo since V1, Currently I use V4, and I think it is the best DAW around, but I am starting to think that Steinberg is turning it into a real mess, it is their flagship product but it doesn't even have a real company support forum, and it has bugs that just don't get fixed. I am beginning to wonder if it is likely to be dropped. I would like to have another option besides Protools, but I haven't used Logic in about 10 years so I have no knowledge of what it is like. Does anyone have an overall comment about the Logic experience these days? Protools 8 looks great but I am not buying their hardware under any circumstances, so I only use Tools when it is a rental rig or part of a studio I am working in. Logic looks like a good option from here. I guess that the price will take a big jump soon if it hasn't already...

i've been using logic for about 3 years now, made the jump to v8 late last year. had to slightly change what i was doing, but i think i work faster on the new layout than i did on the old. v8 seems like it isn't as sharp a learning curve as the old versions used to be either.

i find that everytime i work on tools now, i'm frustrated by the way it flows. i think that logic is a little bit more (dare i say it..?) logical, especially since the v8 release. i know a lot of people would argue with me on that point..

Um, sound wise, i can't really fault the programme. i prefer the mixes i get out of my personal system than when i use tools at other studios. but, i obviously know my setup better so..

i once heard the sound of logic described as 'like it was coming out of a dirty sock'.. as opposed to a clean one i guess.. but, a salesman did say that to me, maybe the commission on digidesign is better than apple..

overall, i'd say its worth checking out. the pros of not having to use digi hardware kind of out way any other considerations for me. and the price of logic is pretty good.

I have been using Logic since 98 and think you will not find any problem in swithching from Nuendo. Audio Engine/Sound wise i don't hear any diference between DAW's but i don't bother to look into this type of detail. Extensive reading of others opoinions tends to leave me with the opinion that any miniscule sound diference is overshadowed by other workflow / bang for buck aspects. Logics strong point in the past was midi and sequencing but now its audio capabilities are IMO just as powerfull and useable as any other DAW.

From my years with Logic, -

(1) like any DAW, the experience is better with a faster, RAMMed up processor and a large screen

(2) The new(ish) Logic Studio Pro collapses most of the old windows into just one - which is fine, but using it efficiently takes a bit of getting used to if you very familiar with the old way of working - again, like any DAW the learning curve is steep until you begin to internalise it

(3) yeah yeah, I know people say they can hear the difference between audio engines, and I'm not going to argue with them. Choice of mic at the very start will play a much larger role in how the thing sounds.

(4) Logic comes with some very good plugins - perhaps not everyone's cup of tea, but if someone says they are unusable they're trying to sell you something.

(5) The investment is not as steep as PT for a HD type rig. Plus you get to use apogee converters like the Ensemble.

I'm a great believer in working with the one DAW til you know it backwards. Others can be the jack of all DAWS .... But I'd be the first to admit that you can make a great record using any of the top 5 DAWS and I don't pretend that Logic holds the answer to everything. With that expectation, its a great program.

Thanks for the info, I do use an Apogee Ensemble, so I guess it would work well with Logic. I agree that it is hard to be a jack of all DAW's, particularly when each of them has so many deep functions, but I would like to at least get a good handle on Logic and do a couple of projects with it, to A/B the sound of it against the sound of Nuendo via the Ensemble.

timely discussion - I remember seeing some discussion of extremely useful mac discounts on Logic through the forum when logic 8 was first released. Any chance this is still available? (need to familiarise myself with Logic as I've got to teach it to high school teachers next year...)

Logic Studio (Logic 8) is so cheap it's worth getting just for the price. I bought Logic Studio to get Wave Burner Pro the Logic 8 part came with it.

Been using it for years. Still on 7.2 but have used 8. Also used protools, Nuendo and Cubase. I'm still very happy with it and can't see any reason to change. So much so that I dived into the mac thing just to keep using it over going into the much cheaper options while remaining in PC world.

Criticisms. Plugins are great and I use them all exclusively. The compressor can get a little narky - that said I'm not sure how different the V8 comp is (I only briefly tweaked is in a mix that was going from 7 to 8).

Great for all types of writing styles too. Very cool virtual instruments. And as has been mentioned - a "logical" flow for creativity.

I certainly don't dislike the other DAWs - I just feel that Logic works for the stuff I find myself doing. I think that's the question that you have to ask yourself. It's a tool in the end.

I have stuck with Logic for about 5 years now. Before that I used Cubase on an Atari.

I have stuck with Logic 6.4.3 because that is all my Mac supports. I don't use many
plugins as I like hardware synths but I do use some plugs for effects. I get a bit annoyed
at Logic from time to time. I have just about finished paying off an Octopus sequencer
so I am intending to use the computer even less and just to use Logic as a recorder.

I am very disappointed in Logic 8, which lead me to get the Octopus instead
of a new Mac, because Logic 8 no longer supports MIDI Clock input as a Slave,
so you can't sync it from another master MIDI clock.

I'm still on Logic 7.2.3 although I bought and installed 8, 8.1 etc.

I find it does everything I can think to ask it to do both logically and efficiently (but i HAVE been using it for 14 years or whatever, since CLab Notator on Atari) but for me V 8 doesn't sit well...it's like having to learn it almost over again.

As for sound, well I use it with Motu 2408 Mk 3 and what comes out is the same as what goes in, according to my jaded perception. I don't mix in the box but bring the outputs back thru the desk. BTW Waveburner is an excellent freebie!

Hi there,

I'd just like to bitch about Steinberg ;-)

Started with Steinberg on Atari with Cubase and then migrated
to VST on a Mac...support for mac vers got worse as we watched all their
work go into the PC vers.

When I was on the Mac VST list we watched each other drop VST (mainly for PT)
a few of us each week....took about a year.
When the list owner decided to jump ship himself....we knew it was over ;-)

Never been back !
