New Mic - They're Finally Here -

Hi Guys,

I've just ordered one of these babies http://www.compasspointstudios.com/lucas/cs-1.html from Terry Manning. I have absolute faith that these will be very special. It uses a similar capsule in the Bock251. Oliver archut is initially only making 100 units. Mine is number 29. :-)

I recon we should bring as many of these babies down under as we can. Great price.

P.S. I have no affiliation with Terry or Oliver. I just love mics.......

Was PM'ed on PSW by Terry about this and would love to get one, but with the oz dollar taking a dive, i'm going to have to wait to see if it makes some gain before i can afford it. Would love to get one myself.

Yeh the dollar really sucks at the moment. The problem is I can't see it improving anytime soon. I'm taking a blind punt on this but have great faith in them.

TM seems to be covering all bases.............on one hand he's involved with a potential future classic and on the other, he's the "T" in the TnC group buy gear from China.

It looks he is building a business platform through the group buy, and this new mic.The group buy is a great deal, with a seemingly slim proffit, possibly no profit counting the labour in packing and admin etc.Terry has a lot of cred through his years of great recordings, so if this mic is all its cracked up to be then it will be a great option for someone after a mic in the same league as a C12.
The whole marketing thing is built on trust of his and others opinions though.
Anyone heard or worked with any of the Lucas gear? The Lucas Comp sure looks like a good option.

about ten years ago lenny kravitz came to town to do one private show for the record company to vibe them up for the new release (audience of 100!)
his sound guy had a rack of lucas tube stuff and i had never seen it before or since !
later in the night lenny told me it was all custom built for him :)
i guess TM was a bit slower on the internet marketing in those days :)

Yeah pity you could'nt get it 6 months back when the dollar was good, anyway Pete will be very interesting to hear this 1. I guess it's one of those things you either have to jump on pretty quickly or forget, hope it works out well.

I agree it's not the prettiest mic, but, with the most special custom MBHO GmbH capsule, arguably the best in the world currently, Oliver Archut hand wired electronics and transformers, and a new old stock 1970's Blackburn Mullard tube, together with consultation from 2 retired original designers from the Old Telefunken, I recon this Ugly Duckling has all the ingredients to be one hell of a black swan.

If not, Oh well, you win some...you lose some... There's always Ebay.

Here's a quote from Jeff Roberts regarding the finish...

I'm not sure how much I am allowed to reveal about the process that produces the metal finish. I await guidance from Terry and Oliver on that score.

But it's definitely not powder coat, paint or plating, and far more durable than all of the above finishes. I have now dazzled the principles from 2 different plating firms that had never seen a finish like the CS-1 has. My computer won't allow me to make the encircled "R" symbol so I won't use Terry's trademarked name without it......but it is one good-looking and seriously permanent finish.

Fairly deep into the prototyping process a thought occurred to me, due to the nearly indestructible nature of the mic body and swivel, and the incredible quality of the design, the electronics and capsule that goes inside, that CS-1's will still be in use 50 to 100 years from now, we are making parts for microphones that will outlast us by many, many decades. It's kind of humbling.

If I were to buy one I would insist on buying a spare tube or two as well. As their site points out, it is a rare Mullard that they seem to imply that they hold all of the stocks in existence. While they guarantee in good faith to supply these tubes at low cost for life, if something happened and they went into receivership all of those tubes could finish up in an auction house somewhere sold to heaven knows who, and they may fall out of circulation or be bought at pennies in the dollar by someone who might not be so generous with their pricing.

Sounds like those guys are doing things the right way. I hope the mic is fantastic, it would be great to see the birth of a real modern classic.

Sounds like those guys are doing things the right way. I hope the mic is fantastic, it would be great to see the birth of a real modern classic.

Well, if Terry Manning is fussy (which by the sounds of it he is), the the Group Buy mics should be pretty nice as well.
I cant wait for my 1200 and 6802T arrive..

Reports from people who have already received their GB mics would indicate that they're decent "bang for the buck" and that we should be satisfied with what we receive, however, they are essentially "off the shelf" Chinese mics. Chance Pataki needed a respected "name" to give credence to the gear he's sourcing and for whatever reason, Terry Manning got involved. In all likelyhood, this current GB is probably being used as a PR exercise to establish a reputation in preparation for the introduction of additional (Chinese) gear they are planning on introducing.

Some people are already aware that months ago I was offered considerable (o/seas) assistance should I wish to run a GB. This assistance involved direct access to exactly the same gear that Chance is sourcing, it is nothing particularly special regardless of the claims made by various people.
