hey AT got some unkind mail from the last article i wrote , along the lines of my heads so far up my arse
its time to get a new AT writer etc etc and more then one

did anybody here feel insulted by that last article..?
anybody find it funny.?
anybody relate..?
anybody feel the need to comment?
anybody holding back on me ?

i was pretty surprised i thought it was a useful humorous piece
apparently not :(

i am trying to figure wether to arc up or back down

I found it humerous. Tell 'em all to get racked.

On another language front The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of "k". This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where! more komplikated changes are possible.

Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.

Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.

By the 4th yer people wil be reseptiv to steps such as
replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v".

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensi bl riten styl.

Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.

People really need to relax.

They are probably just embarrassed because they have been mis-pronouncing some of these words all along.

I didn't find a single thing wrong with the article.

It would be interesting to see 'where' the complaints were coming from - home recordists, semi-pro's or professional guys (which I think is unlikely).
I hope Chris or Andy publish those replies so we can see what they were getting 'racked up' about
I thought it was good and humorous article - always my first read of the whole mag (prolly 'cause I hang around here alot!!)
I was known to mispronounce some thing audio once........ once.

If I were you, I'd laugh it off and not worry about offending anyone....your new found notoriety can only increase sales.....water off a ducks back etc

I hate it when people mispronounce things.

I work as a teacher at a high school. And teachers, including English teachers say shoe-dents, instead of students. They say shoe-pid, instead of stupid.

I can't stand it. It is driving me crazy.

I can't stand it when people mispronounce my name: Gian (italian for John). You say Jun, like in sun, but with a "j"in front. I always try to pronounce people's names and places correctly.

I can't stand when people say "ec cetera" when it is supposed to be "et cetera"
Or they say "expresso" like they are having a fast coffee when it is "espresso"

And so Rick, after my rant, all I can say about your article is THANK GOD someone cares about how things are pronounce in the audio industry.

These try-hards who think they are so good but have no idea about anything, are probably the ones complaining.

I think, Rick, if you stopped your article, AT would be a much poorer version of what it is.

Please don't stop writing. Please keep up with the same thing you have been doing.

I suppose it is like letter's to the editor, sometimes they can be harsh, but that is no reason to stop.

Keep going Rick, please don't stop.

I for one love all your article. Don't quit. I would be very sad if you did.

To answer your questions:
Insulted: I was not insulted at all.
Funny: I thought it was very humorous, like you normally are.
Relate: Yes, most definitely.
Comment: Yes, doing it now.
Holding back: Not in the slightest. I could have written more strongly, but my wife told me to be careful as I might get flamed on here.

thanks for the input guys i am not too fussed , AT arent too fussed they just thought maybe i could be a bit more positive for the next one considering the amount of negatives they got - which is really the first time its ever happened.

i just would like to know , where or how this bit of guff was any different to the other stuff i have ever written , maybe its the first stuff this guys actually understood and felt qualified to respond to, maybe its the dumbest thing i ever wrote , maybe a couple of the examples i used (they were real) are the couple of readers that wrote in ..?
dunno must have missed something.

i have decided instead of going into the shallow end audio for a laugh and a bit of a splash to go real deep into the audio pool in the next issue ....
cant wait for the letters then, rick your wrong you cant hear that.. yes i can... no you cant ...yes i can ... no you cant , oh wait yes i can , but it seems YOU cant :)

I haven't read the article, but I must have my head stuck pretty far up my own arse too because pronunciation is something I like to get right even if the occasional multi-syllabic phonetically impossible conundrum comes my way. I'm not saying I'm the worlds greatest linguist but I think that congratulations are due to those who seek to preserve the integrity of the "English" language rather than dumb down it's complexities. So... jolly good work old chap!

Rick I thought the article was rather humorous, and in some respects mirrors my own thought towards the subject of "knowing one's shit" to put it mildly.

I'm guessing that the letters AT are receiving are probably from the audio dweebs you speak of in the article.

The rest of us who are in the know are still quietly chuckling away and getting on with life...

probably the pacifying type that talks about how its cool to use Sm58s for vocals....then they go home and plug in their 58s into a mackie desk..........but forget the pros plugged it into to crazy pre + tape.

Hey Rick. At least you know people are reading your articles.

I've only brought one issue in the last 2 years but brought almost everyone up to then and always read your articles, wether my opinions were positive (or thought you were an arrogant @#$% :-)))) or not they were entertaining to read and the only column in that mag that I read regularly.

We all have different outlooks on life so I wouldn't be worried in the slightest.

That's something that all audio magazines are guilty of. I've never seen a bad review
in any of them and that pisses me off. Some equipment is either just plain bad sounding or useless, but reviews in general don't say this in fact they are often mendacious (I've always wanted to use that word in print) or just down right bullshitting.
I thought the article was funny and informative, AND I have always pronounced Moog with a soft sound (like vogue) so there!

well, they are being paid for their advertising so I guess if the mag wrote a crap review, they'd lose some of the income from the adverts..
hard to bite the hand that feeds you sometimes.. (although I DO agree with you Richard - there are never BAD reviews.. ever.. and it IS disappointing to see)

at least if people are walking in the door of your studio and mispronouncing equipment names, hopefully they are paying for the privilege and let them say what they want

if its on the interweb, well we all know what you think of the 'world wide waste of time' so if them saying/writing it wrong bothers you then so be it

people come to you because you are knowledgeable, experienced and can do (and probably hear) things that they can't. No need to beat on them for it. The article wasn't your best work

I'll lay my cards on the table and say that i thought the article was a tad wierd.

There was an air of belittling someone because they mispronouned a word.

Once upon a time I misunderstood the pronounciation of Moog, at the time everyone in the circles i moved within in Adelaide mispronounced Moog. It is not unreasonable that I wouldn't know the correct pronounciation. Of course that didn't mean that i couldn't pull up an interesting patch on a Modular Moog and indeed knew enough about additive / subtractive synthesis theory to later teach it at the Conservatorium of Music.
And of course the day came when my mispronounciation was gently corrected. Like most days, that was a good day, ... I learnt something new.

I know for sure that I probably mispronounce and misspell a whole stack of words....crikey some days I can barely string two words together. Whilst I'm always up for correction, it doesn't mean i'm I'm any less a person and my feeling was maybe the article had the potential to generate that perception.

Then again maybe I just read it wrong, hell, sometimes i read things all wrong too!
