PRICE DROP $4000
Manley Vari-Mu "Variable-Mu" Stereo Limiter Compressor
This really needs no description other than to say it is probably the only "standard" compressor in the mastering business and can probably be found in more mastering rooms than any other piece of equipment. This unit was purchased new with warranty in Australia in late 2003. It has lived a very easy life in the studio (actually mostly at home) since then. I'd love to say that it's been well used but sadly business has not been that good, so it comes to you with not a lot of hours on it.
It has the T-Bar mod, which for typical mastering applications (ie low gain reduction) does not make a huge difference (although it does tighten up the LF in a good way), but when pushed harder (ie typical tracking or even mix use) is closer to the vintage Mu sound (ie Fairchild/early vari-mu),
This Vari-Mu comes to you in basically perfect condition, including the original shipping carton and manual. I'll have Ross Giles go over it and adjust the bias and calibrate it before delivery, but rest assured it is in as-new condition. I bought it when the AUD was buying about 59 US cents, and the RRP was $8799. I got a great deal at $6750 (plus another $350 odd for the T-Bar kit and installation). Now I know things have changed since then but you're still looking at the better part of $7000 AUD for a similar unit new, so I think my asking price of $4400 is very reasonable.
I have loved this thing dearly and I am very sad to see it go. But things have taken a different direction for me and I can't keep it anymore.

just want to give this a bump. i'll consider sensible offers.
i'm actually using it for the first time in a non-mastering context, ie tracking, mix buss etc... and loving it. so definitely not just a mastering toy.
it's just a luxury i can't afford right now.

i hate maths. i just 'dropped' the price on gearslutz by $400 - only to find that the aussie dollar has strengthened so much in th last few weeks that my price drop actually raised the price by USD 50. how did that happen?
having said that...
USD 2200 = AUD 3100 today (although USD $2500+ is closer to the median price)
add AUD 350 for shipping
add at least AUD 100 in customs and bank transfer charges (much more for paypal)
add 10% GST
add AUD 200 to swap out tranny/buy big step-down
my dodgy maths brings that to about AUD 4100. am i missing something?
but fair enough, looks like i'm keeping it.

Don't mention Vintage King Rick!
You'll upset some people around here if you talk about buying from overseas.
