I bought a pair of Akai M8 amp modules off eBay ages ago and have finally admitted to myself I will never actually do anything with them. I see on teh internets a few people with pretty high end gear have these as preamps. This gets me to thinking, since I can't DIY stuff, I was wondering what it would cost to get someone to DIFM (do it for me) and whether anyone here has any hands (ears?) on experience with them.
Basically, is it worth the effort/money or should I stick 'em back on eBay?

I've been doing this with my m8 set as well. I had it running for awhile as a micpre with Dave McCluneys help and it was really interesting. Ended up as the main vocal pre for a jazz/retro album. Gav at Pickstone Audio Engineering has the schematics at the moment and when I get the cash he'll finish the project for me. Maybe give him a call too

I've got an M8 too that is just sitting around. There is a guy in Canada who mods them vintage audio but Canada is a long way away for such a heavy item. I was wondering the same thing about whether they can be done in OZ and whether it's worth it. I did overdrive my machinedrum through the pre at very low levels and loved the tube distortion.

yeah - Finn is keeping us both busy. 9 weeks old today - best bloody DIY project i've ever undetaken. but the fault-sourcing stage is damn hard work.
