Digi PT 8 HD

Anyone using PT 8 yet, if so is it stable and worth while moving over to it?

I have been experiencing recurring crashes whilst using the new playlist edit function but other than that it seems solid.

PT8 looks different interface then what you are used to but it all works the same. Some of the new plug-ins are useful others arent.
I am running on a 2.4ghz imac and everything seems fine so far.

we've been running it for a couple of months now. Fairly Solid and haven't had any real glitches so to speak of.
much better interface and more intuitive than previous versions - 5-6-7 etc..
running ours with HD2 Accel also with the UAD2 Quad card and some outboard compressors, emt plate etc - all works well!

I upgraded to PT8 and used it for a recent score/tv commercial which had me running the video track along side 50+ audio tracks, midi, plenty of plugins, groups etc etc.

It did shut down once, I cannot remember why but it wasn't a problem as I simply re-opened the session again, nothing lost.

I agree with the aesthetic - it's smoother to work to and less "I just downloaded a multi-track studio from the net" such as the stylings of the old ones! Haven't used the new scoring/notation capabilities (yet) but it hear it's pretty solid and a big leap forward.

Needless to say the best thing with this version is the increased track count for any LE users (not you, I know!). And about time.

I've used some of the new plugins such as the AIR range of plugs (everything from reverb to modulation/filters, a lot there) and I can't say I was overly impressed but I found a few interesting and potentially usable results. Vintage Filter set to 'fat' (I think it was) sounded okay on a narrated-style vocal which made it sit well within a plethora of other tracks but I don't think I'll be reaching for those too often. Still use the Digi reverbs and EQ (and even comp!) often in conjunction with other plugs (and returns from outboard).

So for what it's worth, I like it for what I do and prefer it over its predecessor.

Why hav'nt they! I just don't get it. That would drive me insane, would probably not last more than a month with me, I'd take a hammer to the thing without ADC only out of shear frustration.

for the same reason they limit the track count - if you're 'serious' you should be using HD...

In general (maybe not in this specific case) it's cheaper and more efficient to disable certain features from a fully featured flagship package than to completely re-write the code; companies get to sell their product at different price points without having to pay for extra development. Can't say that this is exactly what's going on with Digi and LE / HD but it wouldn't be without precedence.

I thought when they wrote software they are all fully functional copies but then disable certain features to be arseholes for the cheaper versions.

I dunno whenever I use Nuendo or Cubase the audio workflow is identical. I actually use the same template for either. So far I think video support is the only difference.

Whenever I think of protools the image I get in my head is of this awesome looking Ferrari with no wheels sitting up on blocks.
