Roland space echo - RE-201, 150, or 101. I want one in good reliable working condition. I'm not precious about dings, marks, or scratches.

Multicore cable - I could use a couple of 6m lengths of balanced/shielded 8 way, I guess I could use thicker stuff too. I would prefer mogami, klotz, canare, something like that... Anyway, if someone has offcuts/surplus please let me know. (hmmm... Do you even get multicore "offcuts" 6m long? :-) Otherwise, does anyone want to recommend the best place to buy new multicore in small amounts?

I have $$ to go, and/or gear to trade.

Arvind at Puresonics www.puresonics.com.au does multicore and custom lengths - good prices and fast turn around.
I got all my Mogami Neglex mic cables as well as instrument/speaker cables from him and had them in 24hrs from order time!!
Couldnt recommend more highly..

oooh cool! thanks for the pointers.
I'll have a bit of a think and sort my exact requirements out today, and see what i can get to match them.

I was looking more for raw cable to terminate myself (will want TRS) but it can't hurt to ask about getting something made, too.

multicore sorted - thanks mike, you're the best!

I'm still looking for an early space echo.

....and while I'm at it, I still want an oberheim SEM. (nearly had one from the EU a few months ago, but the seller had really bad communication - not prepared to send $1000+ to someone I can't talk to, or even get emails from in a 2 week period)

If anyone sees any of these about, let me know please.

thanks for the heads up!

Though that's a 301. I think i want to be a mindless trend-following gear snob, and go for one of the earlier non-opamp versions, like a 201 or below. Even though I've never compared a 201 side by side with a 301 for myself....

A grand starting price is top-dollar though, even for a 301. You would want it to be MINT for that.

Check Japan eBay, there's a couple going for under 800 shipping included. I got my 201 from Japan and it's minty-fresh, very happy with it. From what I've seen, although they inflate prices here and there, Japanese gear sellers seem to source pretty clean units (generally).

Also I know that Jonathan at Eastern Bloc Studios (Melbourne) is selling off a lot of gear prior to heading back to the States, and he has a RE-301 and an SRE-555 (rackmount 501) in his equipment list. Here's a link to that: http://www.easternblocstudios.com/equipment.php

His contact details are on his home page. Hope that helps.

yeah there's a 201 I've been watching on japanese ebay i could buy right now, postage included, for under $800. Very tempted - though with something electromechanical, there's really a preference to be able to see it running before paying the $$$, if I can.

And while I do have a spare stepdown transformer lying about, I'd prefer one at the right voltage to start with...

Yep fair enough. Worth hitting up Jonathan on that link I provided then.

Also, I haven't had to change my tape yet but have heard that Melmusic supplies good replacement tape (better than the original RT-1L as that is all old-stock and will have degraded by now and will dirty up your heads). Just something to keep in mind for the future.

Good luck, hope you get what you're after!

Tape seems quite easy to come by. I also found a guy who makes new pinch rollers.

I just bought off the bay for around $10us, there seem to be a few sellers if you do a search for 'tape echo'. The more you buy the cheaper it is. Thirteen has also recommended Melmusic to me for tape too. I wonder where the tape comes from and I wonder if you're really just paying someone to splice tape with a razor blade sometimes. I wonder how hard it is to make your own?

I've seen a lot of discussion on forums on that before. Some swear that you can use any tape the right size, others that the wrong tape will ruin your heads. (which seems right.) I guess if you can source the right tape and learn how to splice (can't be that hard?) you could save a bit of cash in the long run. I'll try and find the threads I read relating to this and see what they turned up in terms of a supplier.

hey yeah - been watching ebay including the japanese auctions - for that one I was very very tempted, but still not sold on the 100V and shipping from japan idea..... that was the 2nd time through ebay for that particular echo machine.

I might have to give it a bit of a wait now - just bought some 2nd hand monitors off ebay (dynaudio BM6a) to go with my recent 2nd hand audio interface (fireface 800)

I have a bunch of stuff ending on ebay tonight, but even with all of them, plus the things I sold the other week..... against these new purchases, my savings will need a bit of time to recuperate. (unless I see a space echo for a massive bargain.... :-)

haha! naah... these (audio interface, monitors, space echo) are all things I've been meaning to upgrade for about a year.

impulse purchases for me are usually small cheap things (that I've been selling off a whole pile of to make some $$ back for these big things)

I have a RE-201 that could probably go.... works fine.. a little noisy compared to the new stuff. I don't have any tapes for it though. I asked on here before about tapes and they gave me a contact in Sydney for them..about $20 from memory. I've had this for about 20 years or more but haven't used it much lately. .probably swap some gear for it.. need some converters!!!!!! Soon as i steal some batteries back off the kids I'll take some photos for you.

If no-fi has decided he no longer wants one (or is the bidder on the one I commented him about and just isn't saying ;) ) I would be interested in having another unit to run synths through. I'm in Brisbane and drop by the Goldie every so often. Let me know if you don't hear from no-fi and we'll work something out. :)

Cheers

that one you pointed to on ebay is a 301 (though is still damn cheap right now) - I really wanted a 201 or a 101, so this is more up my alley.

Fair enough, but the 301 is essentially a 201 with added Chorus and Sound On Sound function isn't it? Or is is that the 301 leaves behind the discrete, transistor based goodness of the 201? Just curious as to what's shaped your preference. :)

As far as I know the 201 is the only discrete version.

I've been using mine a lot of late and it has the X factor thats for sure.

Good just to run stuff through it without ANY delay/verb just for it's sound.

well main reason is I don't really want the chorus or sound on sound.... and the 301 is usually more expensive.

To be honest, I really only want the RE-101 (simple folded spring reverb is something I never liked - maybe if I had one of those giant studio ones I'd change my mind) But RE-101s seem pretty much unobtanuium in australia (I assume original price difference between 101 and 201 was very small)

and yeah - the 101/201 (and 150??? no idea what the difference is with the 150, looks like a rebadged 101) is the classic grungy THING I'm particularly after. if I wanted a cleaner more studio unit, I'd be asking for the 501/555
