Go figure

Exactly. I always try to support local companies and don't mind paying some percentage higher. However, in this instance it couldn't be justified. So, instead of making some marging, they made none.

5 years ago pricing on a lot of things was crap. Now seems a lot less although the ones that are I wonder how many they sell.
I mean 10-20% you might go for local support if you get support. 50% well everyones tight.
I know I ordered parts that came in 3 days from the US where I waited 3 months locally and got sick of waiting. Although we moving off topic here if there is a topic :)

Cracks.. Well I know when I had the studio running a lot of competitors had pages of plugins they used.
Weird like many here I prefer hardware although plugin wise mainly get buy with few plugins. Mostly the Sony stuff I have had for ages.
I also remember years ago running a cracked version of Cubase as my legit copy crashed all the time and the crack fixed this :)

Mine's the surround version. I'd be surprised if there's any of those near that price.

Hey Peter, what are you using it for? Is it post? I often wonder what happened to everyone who was setting up surround mixing rooms for music. Kinda just faded away except for live stuff.

I got this unit not for surround but for the extra configurations. It'll run 4 mono on seperate engines. Dual Stereo, or 5.1. They'll cascade as well. Pretty awesome for a single rack unit. I don't do any surround work.

The AMS is highly desirable now ain't it?
80's revival and all that.

I'd love one, but couldn't believe the price when I looked recently.

I have an AMS RMX16 reverb and an AMS DMX delay, they are fantastic, although I get a bit tired of repairing one or other of them every 8 months or so... Mind you, I am getting quite used to working on them. Both Rob and I seem to spend a lot of time fixing AMS units. Really if you are going to have one it is essential to have it re-capped and re-cabled and some mods done to the power supply. I put the reverb and the delay into a 4U rack sleeve, I was thinking of renting them out as a pair, until I tried to lift the case, and I decided that they were fine sitting right where they are.

Hi there,

Steve, Robs been through mine recently and its good to go !

I had a good time last week A/B ing the NLR on the AMS and the R880.

The early reflections are really dense on the AMS programs but the R880 had a metallic *ring*
no matter what I did to the EQ ;-)

There's just some great *mojo* in that RMX !

cheers

They are not really too unreliable if you go over them and change out all of the ribbon cables, tantalum caps and power supply caps, add a better fan, change out a few critical parts of the power supply and add some varistors, and if you are lucky they should run fine. there are certain IC's that can fail more than others, we are talking 30 year old chips here, but if they are looked after and not fed power surges that should be pretty reliable. I must admit most issues that I have with mine are because I haven't quite done all of the preventive maintenace that I really should....

hey i call bullshit steve
as a guy who has had lots of AMS gear in his life and who untill recently had two million dollars worth of outdated AMS gear under his house ( yeah i got it all by swapping it all for a case of beer)
let me tell you AMS gear was ALWAYS fragile , ALWAYS tempermental and ALWAYS sounded fantastic.

even when they were new they worked fine untill they got hot or you moved them an inch or you thought they had not crashed for so long that you actually trusted them.. then the bastards would bug out , always at the wrong time because they were so expensive no body ever had more then two
and the card readers ...? well dont get me started.

that said just go and find me a better reverb setting for making music then ambience 1.8 ..... ok ambience 2.1

I'm guessing we (pommie bastards) sent you all the Monday morning lemons.
Can't remember a single session break back in the 80's due to an ill performing AMS box.
Now Aussie Fairlights? That's another story!

Ha, ha.
It's funny that what goes around, comes around.
Suddenly old Fairlights, Synclaviers, PPG, AMS and Publison FX boxes are all the rage again.

One of the guys I'm partners with here is a co- owner of Fairlight Australia. He has used every model since the MFX and we have at least one of each out the back, including several QDC's. It's a bit like a museum, albeit a badly organised one.
We also have a few boxes of multitracks from the recording sessions for the Fairlight samples...

I know...it is sooo tempting, but they would likely need a bake. I can see myself being caught with them in the safe, saying "I didn't do nothing" and my face all covered in oxide smears from licking the multis...mmmm, tastes like the 80's....

A friend in the UK started collecting Fairlight in the early 90's.
He obtained several that came from well known owners, and contained sample libraries full of well known sounds from their albums.

HAHAHA! That is such a cool picture to imagine! You should set up a photo shoot like that anyway (licking less valuable tape) and put it on your company website homepage... With a caption like "We really like audio."

Maybe the Powerhouse Museum or the National Film Archive could chip in... surely that qualifies as of national interest? Geez, if they were going to heritage list the old Festival Neve that somehow wound up at 301 Byron....

Hey Steve, if they were mine they'd be transferred and then made into a superman cape already, which would wear when I mix.. Thanks for the offer, I'm not sure what plans the guys have, I'll mention it to them. Pete, these aren't the very first batch, they're from some sessions at 301 in 86. I know there are strings on there, not sure what else. Pretty sure the FL boys have all the original drums and voices etc. I keep hassling for a re-issue smaller cmi I think there would be a market, if not here at least OS.
