I thought it was a NEVE of some sort. Looked too simple to be an SSL.

i thought the calibration markings on the fader panels looked like early SSL. also looked like there were no automation controls, and the channel strips didn't look like neves... but i'll defer to rick, i'm sure he made records on it.

The TV on the left has a "Chromatec" 1/3rd octave spectrum display on it. Made in Melbourne, and some are still in use at 301 I think.

BTW the best widely used consumer format for audio is DVD-Video. All DVD players must be capable of playing back at least 96kHz 24bit under the DVD-Video specification. Neil Young uses it for his releases, providing a "bonus" version on DVD along with his CD releases.

btw i have the "JOK" "festival" 351 mono 1/4 " mastering machine here (greg refurbished it )
i want to get rid of it and had a few guys offer $$ for it
do you guys want it to do the "historic" A> D transfers ( i think there are about 600 mono titles in the list)

Hi Otto, I could be wrong but.... I think his new releases or some of them will be released as 192-24 on bluray, my mum's a fanatic, on his forum he said make sure you have 192 compatible bluray, so my mum said.

Anyway 2nd hand info, heh.

I finally did my "brand new record to DSD and compare with the same track on the CD" a couple of days ago. I expected that the CD would sound dull compared to the record, in fact the record sounded bright, punchy and open, and the CD sounded like a cassete tape that had been played a hundred times. The difference was shocking, the CD sounds like s**t compared to the vinyl. I am not exaggerating, the difference was chalk and cheese. I am on the hunt for some more unplayed records from the early 80's for some further tests.

This might not be a reflection of the media but rather the mastering process. It would be fairer to get a disk from one of the audio file range and a record of the same material. Did chesky do any vinyl ?

I agree, there could be many variables. I am now on the hunt for new LP's and 12"'s, especially from the pre-digital recording era that were also released on CD to do more tests. I have to say though, after hearing what the record sounds like, the New Order "Substance" CD that I have liked so much sounds really lame next to the record. I wish I could post the results, but unless you have a DSD player there is no point.
