Anyone here at AFTRS?

Just curious if anyone here is involved (student or otherwise) with the AFTRS Sydney (Aust Film Television Radio School)? I'm doing a 6 day short-course at their new facilities at the old Showground, Moore Park. Man, that is one well-resourced and equipped facility they have!

i did a 1 day editing master course there, friggin sweet :)

and i used to do some volunteer work in the Production Design department too!!

great place, always enjoy going there.

yeah, i dunno wwhat was up with that name :P

was a cool course nothing to do with technical stuff, more about the art of editing, with the head of editing at the time going through an example edit of an Aussie drama.

A good mate of mine was accepted there for I think a year long course, he went on to do some very big films, mission impossible, babe, dark city just to name a few, opened up a whole lot of stuff for him, then he got into filming, did some even bigger films then.

Would be good to do a couse there, I'd like to do an introductory film audio course or something one day, just to learn formats, work flow and other basics.

Great, I must say I'm very impressed by the teaching staff at AFTRS- the lecturers I have all work at the top of their game and teach what you really need to know to either get work or just work smarter (I'm doing an audio editing/digital multitrack course with a radio/pro tools focus). The computer labs are nicelyl specced - you work on quad core mac pros with dual screens and every bit of audio software known to man plus mbox pro2s hanging off each box, dual overhead projectors, tannoy monitors - even real cream bikkies in the student kitchens. Now I see where my tax dollars went....

We're in one of the recording studios there tonight for micing and recording techniques. Mark Gable of The Choirboys is the guinea-pig while we chuck every mic known to man in front of him and his guitar. Poor guy. And we'll make him sing Run To Paradise (again - and again - and again).

I went there (Nth Ryde) in'91 and did a sound extension course. Worked on student films doing every element - sound design/ location recording/ mixing etc. They had great Studer 24trks etc , neumanns, Schoeps, Steinways; beautifully resourced.
Even got to be boss dog on SBS youth orchestra recording at St Andrews church as well as floor assistant for the orchestra/choir recordings that Stav engineered for Bruce Beresford's Black Robe.
The final coup de gras was scoring an 11 wk world tour doing sound for a Yothu Yindi doco (director called there and i got recommended because of previous experience with aboriginal people) so IME it was a terrific place to spend a year.
