Neve opinion needed

Postby HA_DA_JA » Wed Jun 24, 2009 12:20 pm

I recently acquired some neve modules and I am in the process of getting them racked up. The problem is I can get them both fitted into a 1 rack unit but if I add the DI and VU option they will need to be 2 unit rack instead.

To overcome this they can be all fitted into the 1 unit rack but the Neve modules would not be exposed to the end user and hence the Neve brand name would not be seen. The neve modules would need to be pulled apart to be fitted into the 1 rack unit.

Do you think if you were using or hiring this 2 x channel preamp you would rather have the Neve (eye candy) modules seen or would you be happier to have a 1 rack unit and just know that there is all that Neve goodness inside?

Cheers

Don't know about anyone else but I never hire audio gear because of what it looks like. Kind of defeats the purpose of the "audio" side if you know what I mean.

I could care less about seeing the "N" stuff, but I'd maybe consider that if someone was desperately looking for a couple of
modules for a Melbourn or the like in the distant future they would be worth more in their original condition than chopped up.

for authenticity purposes, especially if you're hiring, it helps to see ur not being jipped, when u see the Neve Face and module on the front of a Rackcase

In a perfect world, it wouldn't matter what the thing looks like - it would only matter how it sounds.

But in this world, I'd rack them up so you can see them. It really does matter.

I have a pair of 1272's in the rack with the 1290 mod, terminated correctly, recapped and in top notch condition. They have a JLM faceplate. I explain to every goddamn engineer that comes in here that these are actually Neve 1272's (admittedly without much fanfare because they don't really deserve any) but they get referred to as the "JLM's" constantly and generally not touched.

The funny thing is the same guys love the "Quad Eight" pre's we have (they say Quad Eight on the front). These are just QE AM10 amp cards Rob racked up using JLM kits and Taiwanese trafo's. These are excellent but are less the real deal than the "JLM's".

I used to find it funny. Now it shits me that I have the same conversation over and over again.

Put it on display, 2U rack.

It's easier to rack things up when there is more room to work with anyway.

I have to be careful that I don't spend too much time in it, as wife tell me to spend more time with her.

I picked up AT in the newsagent.
not a bad read this month.

Am I mistaken, or has the price of this magazine jumped $3 an issue this edition?
I swear they used to be $5. now $8.

Also the cover seems to be less glossy, which feels a bit more environmental, and stuff. shame it comes in a plastic bag, though!
My name is Julian Higginson and I approve of this message.
