Chris I actually find the people at the top can sometimes be the friendliest and most helpful, seems to me mostly they really do like to pass on the knowledge to people who will listen.

When George was over on PSW he would always take the time to answer your questions, even though sometimes the answer was not what you were hoping for. I agree about the EWF stuff, 'September' is one of my all time favourite tracks, in particular one of the best piano sounds ever. It also mentions my birthday in the first line of the lyrics.

I was reasonably apprehensive about him listening to my mix at the tuesday masterclass, as it was hurriedly recorded with very ordinary musicians, and my mixing skills are limited, but what a gracious and encouraging man he is. His criticisms of all the mixes presented were gently spoken, but so demanding of deep consideration, it could have gone on all day. So it came as a shock when he turned into Rupert the Swearing Bear when his protools session file would not load - "F..!! *****!!" etc etc. Very funny, totally justified rant at tech stuff getting in the way of creativety. He is the genuine article, it was a real privilege to experience a master at work. many thanks to the organizers, cheers, Mick

Hi there,

Good to be back home :-)

On Monday met Tim (and hung out the day with him), Rick , Rob and Mick and a whole lot of guys that used to work with me in the 80's ! (like Craig Calhoun :)
George M was very cool..and the surround Frank Zappa Inca Roads presentation was unreal.

On the Tues, did the assistants job at a tracking session in Maroubra and learned a lot.
Wed was wowed by Stavs card tricks and learnt more audio tricks from him , sat in for an Ableton demo and drank some more Slates ;-)

Yeah,..Mick and Rob had the coolest stand...but its really all about the people... and maybe the gear ;-)

Cheers

Hey John,
Glad you made it back all in one piece!! Sounds ike you had a good few days..
Was good to put a face to the username and hang for the day too :-)
Glad you enjoyed the Slates man ;-)
We didnt get to see many TR forum members on the day, but was good to catch up with Rob, Mick (and Rick when the chance arose...)
Talking with GM was definately my highlight though - being a Toto & Little Feat fan I had a few Q's for George..
He was ever so gracious in his answers and was keen in discussions..

Tim did you get a chance to talk about his recording techniques and why he does what he does?
Cheers

well I've finally extracted myself from Sydney and gone north...far north for the next 10 days.

It was a really nice to meet a number of guys from the TRF and also some others for whom i've done work over the years but never met in person.

I found it all a bit full on and i'd have liked to have sat down in some peace and quiet and chatted further with people, but I suspect it just doens't work like this at these events. Apologies to anyone if I seemed ratty and wigged out

The best stand in my experience was Audio Technology's ....a couple of worn armchairs and couch, billiard table and a record player with milkcrate of discs.

I'm really hoping some of George Massenburgs "magic" got passed onto our ProTools Accel card and will now inbed itself into our studio now it's back at home! :)
