placing an order for Carnhill output Xformer

Postby HA_DA_JA » Mon Jul 06, 2009 4:58 pm

I am placing an order for a Carnhill VTB1148 output transformer for my Golden Age Pre73 to replace the chinese one. Anyone else who wants any other Carnhill Xformers to add to this order please let me know.
I am getting it from www.audiomaintenance.com
Let me know if you are interested as I will most likely do this within the next 60 days.
Or is there a supplier in Australia who sells these?
Cheers

FWIW I got my Carnhill multi-tap EQ inductors from Audio Maintenance and found them very easy and efficient to deal with. Hope your buy goes just as well.

Does this mean the Pre-73 has finally arrived?

Looking forward to your feedback on it. Pre and post Carnhills.

(I know that's already been done on a thread on GS but the guy orchestrating it was selling modded Pre's so... BIAS RESULTS PERHAPS?)

Replacing the chinese output transformer takes the wooliness out of the lower frequencies.

I remember reading somewhere that the Carnhills neve use in their reissue 1073 aren't available to the public. Apparently the onces we ge had unacceptable low-end distortion. Meh

Yeah Tony Belmont spoke one of the General Manager of Carnhill about that story and he confirmed that was all nonsense.
As to Joes testing of the transformer I did read all about it, but if you wire it up the right way you are fine. And also if all the Neve 1073's are wired up wrong with the transformer then that must contribute to there character sound.
Cheers for all the suggestions.

But if it's not "woolly" why bother?

The Output transformer did change the sound by opening the top end a little more and did give a tighter bottom end.
I feel that once you start stacking tracks with this preamp you might start to notice more of the top end and bottom end problems which could have been changed with a cheap $100 Xformer changeover.
