Mandala CD

Congrats to Jamil K - his CD is now finished and sounding/looking great (and thanks for the copy!)

Tracks 3 and 5 are absolute winners IMHO, but its not like the other tracks are just fillers. Track 2 is fantastically in your face. And its nice to see the return of the an album that sits together as a whole, rather than just being a selection of tracks stuck together. The journey from the gentle build of track 1 to the soothing outro of track 10 is a great ride.

Jamil, what's the deal with distribution? I'd like to write a review for YESFanz, but I'd need to know where to direct them.

Hey Chris what do you think of track 8 "Tigers nest"? That's my fav, I love it where the drums kick back in at around 3min50sec, got a great feel to it. I also love the guitars that come in around 6min50sec, really reminds of something that I really can't remember, heh. Actually there's nothing in that track I don't like.

You know you have some tracks that make the hair on your neck rise? There's a section in Tiger's Nest from about 4:20 to 4:45 that does it for me. And from about 11:00 to the end.

Its got some great build to it, and Jamil's vocals really fly. My sole and indirect involvement in the project was simply to lend Jamil some pre's and odd cables, and the odd mike to audition, but I'm astounded at what he has achieved.

JK, my 15 year old daughter (whom you may recall fleeting around in your visits) reckons her friends will LOVE this album. I still want a signed CD cover form you, by the way.

Yeah I agree Chris, it's the type of album which draws you in and makes you want to listen more cause there is so much going on in each song, the lyrics are great and everything is well performed.

We had a touch of trouble getting the vox to sit right, I don't think the U47 used was the best choice for Jamil's vox, it was a tad dark, though in the end worked nicely. I reckon Pete's Elux 251 would have been a better choice, but that's just me being picky. We started mixing before the vox were even finished, so we had to keep that in mind while mixing the instruments and leaving space for the vox. I think he used my Kiwi for the backing vox.

I think we used Nic's Cranesong trackers and my Avalon eq on the BV, the main vox we paralleled into a tracker and purple mc77 with my Neumann eq's patched in too.

When Jamil first brought the sessions over, we loaded them up and had a listen, I was blown away by what he had brought with him. It was very well tracked which made things much easier to get right.

It's the type of record I always wanted to work on.

i've just managed to be enuff of a good boy to save up enuff $$ to be able to afford an 8 io convertor soon
gonna hit up a lynx hopefully
...and already got my eyes on some cheap as chips vintage synths....

so...no money for mics...which will prob be the case for me, forever!

Lynx, should be good, I'll probably be getting the AES16 and ditch the RME interface, or maybe thinking about 1 of these (and ditch the apogees), which are a very reasonable price. Only a bit more than the Rosetta 800.

I dunno about that, though that's how I feel about the Rosetta's :). Anyway a Lynx should work nicely.

i have no idea what it sounds like. i'm just sick of companies which do really good shit trying to accomodate to every market...it makes companies look cheap....

thats just me, it might sound v good! :-) and prob sounds better than the lynx, hehe
