criticize my mix

hey there everyone.
here's a song i did last trimester for an assignment.i played around with the session and did some eq and some compression(a lot :P)
because i was boored today.
all kindsa criticisms accepted. :)

For what it's worth I like it. However I don't have golden ears and only listened to it on my Mac LED display speakers.

I like the sound of the riff guitar. Like how it sits over the top of the rhythym guitars. My display speakers don't have much bass, but it sounds like the bass melds nicely with the guitars.

OK, to be critical and this is just my opinion. Only two things I've noticed. Vocals need to come up. Particularily at the first verse. Sounds like there's space for it. I think the kick might be too flat. I know the drummer does some quick bursts but personally I'd love to hear it a little fatter and fuller.

Love the intro. Really love how it kicks in. Well done!

thanks for the reply, i figured that the vocals were lower in level after i uploaded it. :P
the drums were just programmed, and the kick was cutting through too much, thats why i compressed it a lot, but i think i went overboard for the most part in terms of compression :P
even for all the other instruments.

BTW, how did you record the guitars and Bass?

guitars were directly recorded onto protools, no pedals or amps, just amplitube plugin :), bass was d.i'ed into protools as well.

To me it seems more of a case of bringing the guitars down (I can't believe that I just said that), they almost bury everything else.
The drum sounds are a bit so so but I don't think it's 'coz they're compressed. Are they from Strike? My nephew sent me some tracks he'd done using that and I thought the same thing.

Hey Tim,

I'll give it a go ;-)

Vocals way too loud(for that sort of genre...reminds me of an American Whitesnake)
Vocals could be wetter and further back in the mix
Snare doesn't crack(too much comp)....rides don't sound real...
where the solo fills are they don'tr sound real and are too thin
too be fair...i understand they are not real drums

cant hear bass
Also funny rhythmn guit automation thing before 3rd verse

Ok...I've only listened to it once on my laptop ..but I'll put it up in the studio and go again if you like !
(cause I may be wrong about those things !!)

Positives
Love the rhythmn guit part and sound
Vocal sounds strong (although on the verge of breakup at severeral points)
Great guitar playing
Sounds very crisp and bright(maybe lacking warmth ?)

For our friendships sake...I won't go further until I listen in the studio ;-)
But you did ask.....(Remind me never to put one of my trax up here!)

Don't forget...everyone hears things differently (just look at Gear slutz!)

thanks John - its cool mate - its still a working mix at the moment.
I'm just looking for pointers in areas that the mix is weak - criticism is required!! ;-)
I programmed and played everything (so yes, sampled drums, etc..)
the vox were recorded by the singer in our band (I'm definately not a lead vox person!!)
interesting about the bass levels - sounds ok in my Tannoys..

I'm sure it will cop a bit of surgical assessment, but hey, I asked!
I cant learn to improve if I dont ask!

vox don';t sound to loud to me at all..maybe you fixed them since...Drums..no comment hehe.too skinny
I'd probably pan the left gtr to the exact opposite of the right one..throws my head off balance when I liisten and covers that side of vocal a bit as well..push more left...
an yway..just listening on web PC and headset..soo..

sampled drums - meh - not as good as a well recorded live kits I know - but thats all I can work with right now..

Hey Tim, I had a listen on my laptop, sounds heaps better than the one I destroyed a few weeks back.

Vox need some automation, bass is non existant on the laptop, which I should be able to hear a touch of, so I reckon put some more high freq's on the bass.

Could use maybe a touch denser reverb.

Also with you being a guitarist you'll never agree with me that the solo is too loud and could use a delay swell on a few tails maybe, heh.

Any stero stuff I can't really make out on this thing.

Not bad, though just needs some polishing here and there.

Oh yeah the cymbals don't do it for me but yeah I know they are'nt real.
