Hello Jim,

At this point I believe the transaction is sealed between us. As soon as sponsor send his card details to you, you are to take the following steps.

A.Do charge $2,000 as your deposit.
B.Charge another $7,000 for the moderator.
D.Prepare all the necessary document (Studio invoice and receipts) for the purposes of record keeping.

Confirm all this and get back to me with the following information for your payment.

(A) your full name
(B) Address
(D) Phone and Fax number. (For easy communication)

I'll be excepting your confirmatory mail so that our sponsor will forward the credit card details to you immediately.

I tried to play along with him for a bit, but when I told him I was a bit concerned about his genuiness I got no further correspondance. Very strange. Not sure what he was playing at. And still not sure what was wrong with his 'caps lock' either.

My Best Friend Martin hasn't given up. He's emailed me twice confirming we have a deal without answering any of my questions. He also emailed me the details for 2 credit cards. I've come to the conclusion that this is a scam quite a while ago, but decided I'd play it further to see how it works. He started calling me at 2:30 am this morning on my mobile studio number. I didn't answer. He called back every half hour until 9:00 am when I finally answered the phone. He explained (very poorly) that he was calling from London & wanted to confirm our long lasting friendship. He quickly moved on. I was to debit the credit cards in separate $2000 transactions until I'd reached $9000. When the transaction was finalized I was to transfer $7000 to an account for the moderator. He hasn't given me that number yet. I tried to keep him on the line asking questions as long as possible. I figured it was all I could do to actually annoy him or cost him money. (Although he probably wasn't paying for the call). I pressed him for band details.He explained he plays the Vocals, they have a guitar, somebody plays the band & they have a xylophone & that they play the english jazz. I explain to him I wasn't expecting a xylophone & this would require more equipment & alot more money. He agrees & says this won't be a problem. Their sponser will take care of everything. He doesn't want to give me an address or tell me who the Moderator is except he's very busy,very good,important man. I will be happy & surprised when I find out how important he is. He tells me again how to transfer the money because by this time he thinks I'm a bit stupid. I play along and get a bit stupider while I'm fishing for info and wasting time. We've talked for 22 mins. He is really trying to get off the phone now. I ask him to explain how to complete the transaction once more & he hangs up. I quickly receive an email explaining how to debit the cards & to email him as soon as the funds can transfer. Again we are best friends & long time business associates. I've played this game as far as I want to now. I've tried to find somebody to report this to but nobody seems to want to know about it. The Police don't care until I actually debit the cards & then they'll only care about catching me. Mastercard has nobody to report this to. I called their stolen cards line & was put on hold for 20 mins while she talked to a supervisor. They had no department to report this to. So I guess if Martin Scott can actually convince someone to do this he is pretty safe from being caught. He must have heard about how rich & naive studio studio operators are. The only hope is to make as many studios as possible aware of this naughty behavior. Bad Martin Scott.

I just spoke to a colleague of mine at work who's brother worked in the Fraud Squad with the NSW Police.
She said contact either the AFP or Fraud Squad and give them the details.
As this is an overseas transaction, it can sometimes fly under the radar of local enforcement agencies.
Worth a try.

was going to comment on this before but didn't want to fuel cynicism regarding o/s clients. Though english is the language of the internet, for most of the global populous it is their second, third, fourth or fifth language and so even perfunctory english skills may suggest an incredibly dedicated and capable individual on the other end of the wire.

However - this is a fairly established methodolgy for credit card fraudsters and was actually covered on last weeks Four Corners...

1) find a wiling participant in a foreign country to receive 'payment'

2) have that perspon forward the bulk of that payment to a 'third party' - usually an O/S account.

3) when the fraud is reported, you're the one who gets a call from the police.

That's the thing I did'nt get, why would you send a payment to a third party for a recording? I think they are collecting real names and addresses to make fake cards, then they go on a big spending spree buying lots of computers and all sorts of expensive stuff and flog it elsewhere. Then the scammee gets the bill.

There was a big one of these taken down a few weeks back, here in Sydney, so you may even find the scammers are even closer to home.

The payment Jim "would" have received would have been from another set of fake cards which would have taken time to theoretically clear, after which the cops would have been hunting him for using dodgy cards and the crooks would have Jim's real details to perpetuate the scam.

That was the Ebay thing wasn't it? The seller baited a scammer into buying his macbook, only to ship a cardboard macbook across the Atlantic at the highest possible shipping rate and marked up on the customs declaration. The buyer created a rubbish western union website/payment to get the mac shipped, but ended up paying hundreds of ££ worth of customs fees for an A4 cardboard folder with some elaborate artwork on it.


...mysteriously though, the original seller and poster who baited the scammer disappeared from the web without a trace.
