You may need to log in to read, I'm not sure, but hey - its free and the NYT is an interesting read anyway.

Since when was autotune dead? It's on 90% of songs played on the radio and probably 100% of all "pop" releases. Shows you how out of touch traditional print media has become.

autotune is not only big..

autotune is redefining performance.

singers dont have it used to fix their singing anymore..they are performing "into" it...so as to induce the artifacts it produces!

I have noticed vocals on most popular radio songs have that "auto tune" quality/timbre about it. Very unpleasant.

has anybody seen the movie 'across the universe'
which was a musical using beatles tunes

the autotuning in that whole movie is unbearable
nearly every second of singing has that unmistakeable autotune sound to it
as well as flat line tones with no vibrato to be seen for miles

i always thought that autotune has two sounds
one is obviously the pitch changing, the other is just this tonality it seems to give

Audotune defines the genre, so.......... you won't hear autotune on a Ry Cooder recording. Listen to what you like is how i think about autotune. And if you work in the same marked that is using autotune as a part of the sound then i suppose you just get used to it or do your own thing. In that market music as a commodity takes precedence over music as art so if you want the bucks you go with the flow untill you sence it's had it's day then you go against the grain and hopefully have a hit that defines a new direction.
I use it when i have to, but always try to make it invisible. for example when a double bass is played in a live recording situation and the level of stage noise makes it hard for the player to pitch. In the venue its almost impossible to hear the pitching problems but in the recording it is a problem.
Actualy, i am doing a CD at the moment for a group of amateur musos in a church with limited ability, who are working to a strict budget etc and Autotune on the vox is going to make the project listenable. They know what i am doing, and have a bit of s laugh about it......such is life.

What about the artistic use of autotune? Radiohead? The Mars Volta?

... and to think that Mark Taylor initially said it was a Digitech Talker with a tone from a Nord lead and gating by a Drawmer! Poor sods trying to get that set up to work when all they needed was to turn the AutoTune correction speed to "insane".

I've heard it happen, I threw auto tune on a vocalist cause he was interested as to what all the fuss was about, then he went be and re-tracked a few parts and he sang as if he had autotune on his voice.
