WTB: G5 mac dual 2Ghz or better

Postby wez » Mon Oct 05, 2009 3:56 pm

hey, my G5 has gone belly up in a big way, in the middle of a project of course.

i was hoping not to upgrade until next year... but anyway. i need a dual 2Ghz or faster, a bare-bones system would be perfect.

so if anyone is thinking of upgrading their machine and would like to make a quick sale, let me know.

alternatively, if anyone has a machine gathering dust, a rental agreement might make sense. i'm in melbourne.

F@#$ing computers. they'll never catch on.

Wez,

Sorry I can't help you out. I have a G5 Quad 2.5ghz that I just took home. I'd sell it - but it's a piece of JUNK! Two of the cores run at TWICE the temperature of the others.

It's the intercooled version. Could barely get the thing to startup previously. Ironically, I removed the fans (deductive logic at it's worst - it was overheating so yeah removing the fans is going to help!) and now I can actually start it up. (but don't restart as it will bite it. Shutdown wait about an hour and then turn it on and it will work). About all it's good for is playing DVD's, but even then it gets real scared when you open up the 'system preferences' and shuts itself down!

Got it for $1350 off eBay. The seller was very good and refunded 100% of the money and said to keep the machine.

You can have it for $2K. ha ha.

But seriously, if you see a Quad come up on eBay, it might be real tempting but these things were a real bomb model by Apple. I find this out after I buy! It is VERY VERY common to have 'coolent leaks' on them. They eat away at the board. Sometimes it can be the fluid pump - which is crazy to change. VERY, VERY common on these G5 Quads. I was quoted by Apple $1750 to replace the logic board. (Apple hardware test crashed 13 seconds into logic board test)

BTW, when it was working it could run BFD2 BARELY. Like 512 samples with popping and clicking. My 13.3" Unibody 2.4ghz macbook (not pro) with DDR3 RAM absolutely smokes the G5. (of course but it still seems weird with this little laptop). I run a G.Force Falcon 256GB SSD and run BFD within Pro tools at 64 samples off the internal harddrive.

So if you're looking at Quad's be careful...that's all.

thanks for the observations dwane.... sounds like you got a dog. my machine absolutely kicked ass and was 100% reliable until it dropped it's bundle with the '3 pulsing lights of doom', indicating bad RAM but historically associated with a motherboard issue. i also think the PMU is shot... on the two or three times i've managed to trick it into starting, the fan speeds fluctuate wildly and it puts itself to sleep randomly.

i have tried every trick in the book to get it going.... and it's just not worth paying apple $150 to tell me it will cost $400 to confirm that i'm up for $1500 for a new logic board.

apparently early G5's are dropping like flies with these sorts of issues.

anyway, i'll just get a new machine, and part out the old one i think - offers?

i am so going back to tape after i have finished this record. seriously.

maybe you should get a PC. and run it as a hackintosh....
at least a P3/P4 era motherboard can be replaced for about $10.

ha already got a couple of those ;-)

i've owned about 15 macs and this is the first time anything like this has happened... so i'm pretty philosophical about it all.

I just bought the pcie G5 (last model before the Intel) off ebay for $1099. I went for this because I could not afford an Intel
Mac after buying the Octopus and this model G5 gives me an upgrade path if I want to buy some PCIe devices. Mine is the
2.3Ghz Dual Core (not dual CPU) and I loaded it with 4Gb RAM for not much more.
