797 Audio_ Mic Brands?

Postby Chris H » Thu Oct 08, 2009 3:29 pm

Anyone know what branded mics in Australia are manufactured by 797 Audio in China?

Joe Malone seems to have a good idea on these.
I think a lot of the MXL mics are also these as well as Apex.

If you read the intro blurb on their website you read this:
"Beijing 797 Audio Co. Ltd was originally founded in 1952 with the help of Germany."

I read years ago that Gefel was the source of help from Germany and it stands to reason that 797's capsules and mic manufacturing benefited from this association and their product has the edge over many other Chinese manufacturers.
As i am looking for good quality mics to take out on my live recording jobs and i don't want to put some of my vintage classics at risk in the more vulnerable live environment so I am getting together a collection of less costly but good sounding mics for this live work. Leave the Bees Neez in the studio and take out the Chi Neez :)
The TNC mics fit the bill very well especially the ACM310 which is a ful sounding mic with a lot of reach. As a stereo pair they exell at capturing the whole group recording stage sound. They are sold in Oz as The Legacy Tube100 for $299 well worth it

Serge at Audio OZ has a few for $199

I don't know what factory in China makes the Legacy branded mics, but next on my list is to try out are some of the 797 manufactured mics.

I've had 2 SP C1's in the past that were 797 branded..
One sounded great, the other too bright - they have both been moved one ages ago..

I purchased a bunch of mics from shuayin mics awhile ago and have much success with them after I did some simple modifications. Upgraded the tubes from chinese to NOS telefunken and mullards, replaced the output TX with cinemags etc. They don't compare to my c414 eb with original c12 cap or my gefells but they are decent mics and on some sources, really shine. Not stopping my look for 'real' mics though...
