Racked 2x ADM Mic Pre/EQ Pair

Postby mylesgm » Fri Oct 16, 2009 3:14 pm

Here we have an early 80's issue ADM 780 Pre and ADM 1540 EQ pair of modules.

The mic pre's have a whopping 80db of gain, a line in, a phase switch and phantom power. Input transformer is jensen and the first 60 db of gain is from a discrete class A opamp (think API, 990 etc) with the remain 20db gain activating a secondary non-discrete opamp. The line stage has plenty of gain and sometimes I use that for high output mics and DI's. Excellent sounding and very quiet these are great mic pre's and you can read plenty of stuff about them on the net.

The EQ's are inductor based with switched frequency select and switched gain select on each band. These things are awesome, think API style Eq and you're in the right ballpark. I have another set of these or I wouldn't be selling. The tops aren't shrill or harsh, the bottom isn't tubby or bumpy and the mids are very smooth. The switched settings make setting and recalling EQ a breeze and there is also a bypass switch to take the EQ out of circuit.

Both modules can have transformer outputs but I haven't fitted that option. Instead the mic pre connects directly to eq and then out to a simple quasi-balanced output. The case is steel for noise rejection, the power supply is a JLM ac/dc unit with an external 24v transformer to minimize hum pickup, all audio travels on shielded cable and there are 4 xlr ins (mic and line per channel) and 2 xlr outs. I had originally intended the other two xlr holes for a direct to eq line in but enjoyed having a line level control before the eq and in the end never hooked up the extra xlrs.

What else can I say? Hunt around on the net for more info and see that there's a chap selling the un-racked modules in america for 400us per mic/eq so this is a steal!

ok, 100 views and no real offers so how about offers over $1000... there's a guy who regularly sells the mic pre pair racked without the eq for us$1200 so this really is a good deal.
