New Macs
Gee have you checked out the new Macs, IMac and Macbook pro in particular.
Logic/Apple are going to give PT a rocket. Digi will need to do something huge for their followers (including me....no flame here).

Hi there,
I have HD...but next year I am going to buck the trend ;-)
I am NOT going to upgrade...
I have HD3 pcie..aurora 16 interfaces @ up to 192 khz
enough plug ins that i don't really NEED to upgrade
and a system that's working flawlessly (admittedly on Tiger:)
Other than quad card processing power, what will the new system @ NAMM
really do for me ??
Cheers

I just recently did a $6K upgrade on my HD rig so I'm not doing another anytime soon. My rig is now in the hands of BJB in their small mix room and I'm very happy with Logic at home. Tomorrow I'm off to get the new IMac...... do you believe a 3.06 gHz, 4 gig ram, 500 gig HD for $1599.

Then again.... almost all my software is PC based..
:-(
You can run Windows on Mac using Fusion (software).

Or just boot the thing as a PC using bootcamp. I've run my macbook pro successfully booting to either platform on a whim.... also used parallels to run a Virtual Windows XP Machine...
I'll probably grab one of the 27" machines as 2nd machine for photo editing... they look SWEET!

We went to get the 28" screen imac's when they first came out but they had troubles with them so we went 24" instead with no problems. Hopefully the new 27" ones are well sorted. I guess being an LCD screen now it should be fine.
But wow why would you not buy a cheap $1599 imac with the specs they have now.
The only thing I dont like is they have taken away the firewire 400 ports and all you have is 1 x firewire 800 port and heaps of USB ports.

about 3 weeks ago I made the switch to Mac. Got one of those 8core Mac Pro's. WOW!!!!! Three days of recording, not one little pause or anything. The PC gave me the blue screen of death a few times a day with protools LE. This new machine is just heaven.
I can now recorded at the lowest latancey in Protools LE with out any poping or freezing. Mixes that were topping out the PC are only using 6% of the Macs power and thats only using 14 of the virtual cores leaving 2 cores for other tasks.
Have i said that I love it yet??? ;-)

Welcome to the real world.
Us dedicated Mac users have been loving the fact that the down time on our machines are practically non existant compared to PC users.
You know longer have to worry about the "Plug in and Pray" method with a MAC.
Everything just seems to work a lot smoother.
Anyway we dont want to start another MAC VS PC debate.

How many processors did your PC have?
I too am not interested in a PC /MAC doodle swinging contest but am interested in a fair fight :)

I've always been interested in talking about the pros and cons of both, it's just someone always says something nasty and then Rick locks the thread.
Honestly though you can build a PC which will perform just as well. I rarely have any problems with my PC's (ummm mostly), the thing I find is plugins will cause crashes sometimes and the soundcard drivers can cause problems, I've found apogee drivers for firewire extremely rock solid, where as my RME card machine will crash a couple of times a week with heavy use.
$1500 is a pretty good price for what you get these days, either way computers are really becoming much better to work with.
I'm just hangin out to get Windows7 once everything is compatable.
I always thought Macs were pretty crap in the past because any OS or software updates usually gave the user hell trying to get it to work again, anyway seems to be a thing of the past.
I nearly bought an intel machine a few weeks back but bought an AMD instead, it was cheaper, so being the cheap bastard I am........... Anyway it's a 2.1 dual core with 4gig of ram, runs very well. :) Next desktop will be an 8 core.

Different tools for different uses really. I'm a mac guy but once my machine is up and working as per Avid/Digidesign spec, all automatic updates are turned off. There's simply no need to have the latest software upgrade unless it fixes a major OS glitch. People who regularly update are, in my experience, forever chasing their tail... re-installing and authorising software because of the time it takes for vendors to make sure their software is compatible with the upgrade. This is for both Mac and PC. There are so many variables with each individual machine configuration (software and hardware) that any upgrade to the OS is always going to upset something.
My machines are working machines. They have good income earning potential as long as they're working. I won't change anything on them unless a client asks for a specific feature in an upgrade I don't have.... and then I will charge them for it.

All my Macs are running well without a hitch and I really don't need to upgrade software or hardware, but I have a mate who has to stop work for 3 mths or maybe 6 mths for family reasons. He is a song writer/Pastor and performs his music all over the world, I just want to help him out and was thinking of giving him my IMac 2.4 with Logic and getting the new IMac for me.
I really can't afford it but I just feel compelled to help him out.

Here here. I think here is alot to be said for holding back on installing updates
I have had both PC and Mac. I really haven't had major issues with either except that I find that I press the alt key for the first hour or so instead of the ctrl key when moving back to PC.

The only downer as an Apple customer is when you buy something and a few months later they release the all singing, all dancing model and cheaper.
I purchased a 2.4Ghz iMac a few months ago, and if my memory serves, it ended up costing more than $1500. Grrrr.
As to upgrades I agree. However I've found that there's always some god-damned reason you feel you have to upgrade.
Like someone updates their softsynth, including a couple of kick-ass sound library updates, but you need OSX 10.9.9 to use it!
Then your DAW starts to crash, because it needs an update to run smoothly in 10.9.9.
Or, as happened to me, a client sends you a file to work with that wont open unless you have all the latest upgrades and updates. Again, leading to a chain of events costing $.
Often, you can't just upgrade one component.

I have an Intel Quad Core 2 Q6600 for my PC so its got plenty of grunt for all the work that I do...
However, I'd like to get a new i7 processor - that would be plenty of power.. otherwise I might add a UAD-2 to the equation.. ;-P

Hey apparently intel are releasing i9 processor which is a 6 core processor. At 2.4 ghz 'engineers processor' (as in late prototype I think they mean. Production ones will be faster) it's 50% faster than i7 3.2ghz.
In dual processor motherboards, that will mean 12 cores and 24 threads. Guys on DUC were talking about it. They're going nuts at avid about HD and how redundant it is with today's intel chipsets. (i7 quad=HD7 etc)
oh i9 being released 1st quarter 2010 apparently

Sorry Nic – may yet happen; but I've enough processing power to run a number of DAW's natively on a laptop with full PDC and more than enough plugin instances for some time now and Digi still haven't released a native alternative to HD.
Would be really nice though...

Works a treat..
On special for $49US at the moment.
I wont be going to HD for a while yet.. Gonna watch closely what happens over at Digi..
