this is off the UA website

"Universal Audio, renowned manufacturer of high-quality audio hardware and award-winning UAD-2 Powered Plug-ins for Mac and PC, today announced a partnership with the legendary Ampex Corporation. Ampex is famous in the professional audio world as innovators of magnetic tape and tape recorder technology — widely praised for its rich, almost magical sound quality. For the first time ever, Universal Audio’s renowned team of DSP engineers will exhaustively and faithfully model these complex devices and media, bringing accurate emulations of Ampex magnetic recording tape to the UAD-2 Powered Plug-Ins platform."

looks like a plugin to me

what a load of garbage. ampex corporation today are a data (technology) company, they've had nothing to do with tape machines for probably 30 years. so the people who designed ampex tape machines (and ampex tape for that matter, even though it was a different company) aren't there anymore and haven't been for a long time.

It'd be like getting guys who work at Electrolux and make vacuum cleaners all day to 'model' the Magnetophon (the first commercial tape machine Ampex copied after WW2, made by AEG who also owns Electrolux).

this marketing bullsh!t really bugs me. because i know that people out there will actually believe this (ie the bigger the lie, the more people believe it).

I wonder if they're going to model all the other things that go with ampex tape and machines, like print-through, smoking MDA's, sticky-shed, wow and flutter, FET's farting out and motorboating, track bleed etc etc.

I might be going out on a limb here, but people that use tape saturation plugins are really missing the point. they're usually the same people that mistake lo-fi for low-quality.

What's the bet we see a preset called the "Bing Crosby". I just know it will be there.

Yes, Imagine it having track bleed. Ha. What a classic! Chris, you should be doing development for UA.

And we could probably buy a 16 track 2" for around the same price as the deluxe edition plugin box set. Plugins are out of control $. And then they have you downloading/updating and authorising like a drug addict until you give up caring. :)

I believe that they have also designed it so that in 25 years time or so, you will have to bake the plugin to stop it from shedding 0's and 1's and clogging your hard drive and converters.

Nick,

I'd be interested in an idea of postage to N'cle. I've just (today) had to replace my pool pump so finances are shot at the moment but I may be interested in 2 to 4 weeks.

Cheers,
ChrisO.....I think. Oh, and F*#K Google, ask me!
