AMS Neve 1073 DPA

Anyone using this? Not the DPD, just the stock-standard DPA.

I had the DPD on order but it's taking too long and I can get the DPA immediately and at a very good price. I have a HEDD192 so the A/D conversion is taken care of. So unless there's a remarkable reason to get the digital version over the standard preamp I think I'd be better to stick with it.

Gee I don't want to sound extra anti internet tonight
but in the real world neve/ams have been making digital converters longer than anybody they are more expensive then you could imagine and although I cannot talk about the converter in question I can say with confidence that any neve/ ams converter wouldbe worth waiting for even over the cranesong
but this might be the only time you read this on the net
by the way I have had many ams/neve digital products and they were always best of there kind by a long margin- ie real pro gear

as for the actual new 1073 I dunno it's not built like an old one

Was talking to a mate of mine a few years ago, he's the recording engineer at Melbourne Uni's Melba Hall and he told me of a study tour he took to the UK in the early 80's. He was shown an R & D section of Neve where every signal from the mic on was digital. In other words the converter was after the mic, or in the mic. The digital desk was capable of performing very flexible routing options etc etc. I had to laugh a bit when i read a year or two back in AT that the "first" digital mic was now available.

Certainly can't argue with you there Rick re the quality of the converters; so many folk rate them highly also. And as a pre, a lot of people are loving them that I’ve asked…never will be the original, but as far as a pre goes it’s up there and like everything else at that level of quality it probably just comes down to taste after that.

My only concern is should I want to sell it in 10 years it would be hard to get rid of because a lot of buyers would be keen to buy the current model with new electrics, irrespective that the pre may not change in design itself.

I think history has shown that when a piece of gear is old, it will eventually gain in value, especially with the "N" brand.

worry about ten years in ten years i would say
there will probably be a law against class a stuff by then anyway - it uses too much power :)

I'm back from a gig and I haven't had a souvlaki. I'm skipping my late night meals. That my fellow audio friends is a crime in Fitzroy when you live near the best souvlaki place in Australia, possibly earth.

I think about Neves and Chandlers, this upstanding owner/occupier thinks about chicken and lamb. We face similar problems, be it on different planes. "Aey, is your chicken La Ionica, mate?" Asks the drunk idiot sipping on his VB pressing the central locking on his keys to the 4x4 with Ozzie flags on it, as if less hormones is going to save him. "It's chicken." Exclaims the tired souvlaki king, now in his 15th hour of the arduous shift. "Do you want chicken, or a subscription to farking womens health magazine?" It dawned on me that this stand up servant to late night post-drinking urges surely contends with this reasonable, if presumptuous question night after night. Well I turned to the wall behind me. Yep, La Ionica chicken it is. The drunk bogan was too wrapped up in his patriotism and sense of self to read the sign. I tap the bogan on the right shoulder, finger moist from his sweat-soaked singlet. "The poster...behind you, see?" I say. "Roit, thanks brov", says the wanker. Order your farking chicken and piss off I think.

But then, in asking this question - am I just like the bogan? Oi, is the Neve DPD?. It's Neve, I can hear the souvlaki man assert. Do you want it or not?

Shut up and place my order.

i too finished a gig around that part of town.... and all i could think about was souvlaki... i resisted and went home and ate some toast (my intestines dont need to be processing meat while i sleep...)

Dude forget brunswick st and its sub par souvlaki
head down the road to the kebab shop on high st northcote and have a 'shish' kebab ie: not a regular 'kebab' off the gyros thingy thats been sitting there all day breeding bacteria......but marinated skewers of delicous chicken or lamb..... fresh as.....

Hi there,

I still regard my 5 years in Melbourne with affection when I think of Twins Souvlaki in
Johnstone St Collingwood....after nearly every gig I'd head there (I lived in Kensington)
and spill it all over myself in my half drunken state !

Is it still there ?
