FS: Ekadek Stereo Valve Pre w/ Pultec Style E.Q (relisted)

Postby Jonathan Kristian » Fri Jul 17, 2009 12:13 pm

Im heading overseas very soon and trying to come up with a bit of extra cash, hence the following:

For sale is an Ekadek stereo valve mic pre, with a pultec style e.q on both channels.

Ekadek products are totally point 2 point custom made in New Zealand.

The pre has phantom power, phase reverse and D.I inputs. (this thing makes a killer bass D.I)
It has a seperate custom made power supply also.

I will post photos tonight.

PRICE DROP!!
$1400.

Thanks,

jonny.

Hi myles,

I wish i could tell you more about the specs but I dont really know what they are. The ekadek stuff is usually one off so i cant find anything on the ekadek site. Im happy to email the guy and see if he can give me some more info.

Your more than welcome to come check it out. PM with a time and we shall go from there.

Cheers.

...And yes, rack phone rocks my socks. I'll pop over next week ok!

Yes Trimax stuff is great though some more useful than others. I currently seem to have more trimax stuff than you could comfortably poke a stuck at. if you want transformers, cases, schematics, even actual mic pre's I'm your man...

hi all. hope im not too late. i wanted to weigh in (gentle like) to set some facts straighter about this old preamp. her name is emily. because she's made from a chassis which was originally made as a clone of an EMI BTR2 tape machine stereo tape head playback amplifier. the main chassis was actually made by brian horman r.i.p of regency recorders in melbourne in the early 1960s. he needed to make a mono machine into a stereo one. as technology changed more, brian kept all the things he made in an unbelievable treasure trove garage and eventually sold them all to me in the mid ninetys. i added the mic preamp stage to this one and fitted the eq circuit to its interstage. those trimax input transformers TAT770 are special hi gain tropical types. hermetically sealed from moisture atmospheres. i.e will last forever. the eq is NOT a pultec style. i dont know when abouts that description was added. (probably inbetween owners at some point over the years) i dont even like the pultec eq. no worries tho. the eq is of a 1/2 baxandal 'williamson' style . bass and treble only. boost OR cut (switchable function). its kind of a tilting type of equaliser. its an excellent sounding unit from what i remember. really powerful. beautiful top end. and big fat smooth bottom boosting action. i made emily for paul hester (another r.i.p unforetunately) and i think barry stockley of fatsound had it too. paul always liked it on drum overhead mics for its clarity and strength. i dont know jonathan but i think his asking price is very reasonable. my price for the item was well over 2 K. and id be pleased to check thru it if needed and make any repairs and maybe modify it further if required. i am (happily) across the ditch of course.

Thanks for the info Mr.Ekadek, great to have you on board the forum and I do love the pre!! Now that i know the original price and the history behind the unit i am a little bit disappointed that i let it go for so little... but what can you do? Good karma i guess.

Sorry for the confusion with the "Pultec" style e.q description, i guess it was Chinese whispers.

So yes the unit has been sold for $1400 a week or so ago to a fellow TR member, just took a while to clear since he is overseas at the moment so i guess ill have a few weeks left with the pre before i have to let it go.

Thanks for everyone's interest.

Okay guys,

I'm re-listing this baby. The sale didn't end up going through and still need the money to fund other purchases.

Now i realise the interest in this piece became greater once Mr. Ekadek chimed in so i'm trying to work out the best way to go about selling this.

I was thinking a TR auction ala rick and his Neotek.

How do people feel about this?

Jonny.

Just piping in to say that Johnny's a solid seller, the pre is as described etc. In fact the build quality whilst it looks a bit homedone (which it is) is quite serious, is an all tube design (3 valves per channel) BIG i/o transformers and from what I can see is completely point to point.

Its just not fitting in with my rig and the sounds I'm trying to pull. But if I was making more rock, blues or 60's style music this would be great. The EQ is simple but you want bass? Big bottom end. You want treble? shelving filter cut and boost and adds a real sparkle even into edgy if you want. Doing a lot more classical and location work and loads of mixing at the moment though...

Seriously worth checking out and also pop over to ekadek site to see some awesome custom built work. I'd love to have one of his hand built mixing desks!

No problems Rick.

Dale im sorry but im going to have to put it up on ebay, there has been quite a bit of interest in the unit so i think its the best way to go.
I will post the link tonight.

Thanks for the kind words Myles.
