Cubase 5 Macbook Pro

Postby Chinagraf » Thu Feb 04, 2010 10:40 am

Hi everyone, how's the new year coming along? Is anyone here running this combo? I need a portable setup to travle with and already have Cubase on my PC. I'd like to get a Macbook Pro cause I like my imac so much, but I stil want to run Cubase so my systems are cross compatible and I can transfer projects to my mix room if I need.
Pardon my ignorance, but can I run my VST plugs on the Macbook Pro using Cubase as the host ?
Thanks

If your studio is a PC then VST plugins will not run under OSX on a MAC. Cubase does run VSTs on OSX but they need to be versions built for the MAC.

Products that are cross platform would allow you to have the same plugs on the Mac, but anything that is PC only would not run on the Mac.

You might also encounter issues where cubase couldn't work out that the VST/Kontakt instrument in your project needed to use AU or VST/Kontakt instument when you go to the Mac.
Think it really depends on what plugins you want to run, you would kind of need to try it and see. The feature where plugin info for plugins not found is preserved may mean that you can still work on the mac and still have your settings intact when you get back to the PC. Also freezing could help you too.

As a fallback you could bootcamp the macbook.

Might be worth asking the question on the cubase forums - seems experience differs depending on what plugs you use.

If I go to the AU apple store, order a 17" MacBookPro, the shipping time goes from 24hrs to 3 days if I select a 3.06 Core 2. These are the same options I see in the US store. Are there some other processors coming?

Shame they are not putting any quads into the Mac Books.

Just ordered a 27" iMac (Quad i5) for my wife. Interestingly the Dick Smith in George St Sydney was doing 10% off and 50% off the apple care - which the Apple Store down the road was also matching - they even volunteered this info when I went in.

I think the one I'm talking about is the i5 and i7, but it is only available for Imac, not the Macbooks as yet, but it's going to be? I also heard JB HIFI are doing some deal, not lower price but throwing in extras...free apple care, wireless printer..
I'd hate to buy a Macbook on the weekend and then see a new processor released next week. I'm not in a mad rush anyway. Got at least a week..

New Macbook Pros now released - 15" and 17" have i5 and i7 (QUAD core) options.

Looks like they all do firewire 800. More info here :

Don't quote me on this but from what I read the mobile i5 and 17 are not quad core - I may have it wrong but keep your eyes on the Macworld site as they'll be testing them soon.

Very interesting/dissapointing! Certainly the hype was that they were coming.

I had assumed that because the iMac i5/i7s were quad these were too. Some mobile I7s are , but these are slower speed than apples uses, so I think you are correct.

Will make the performance stats more interesting, and might mean that buying the last model as a run out could be good value - also suspect it means we wont see a quad core macbook for a while now.

If you're running Cubase use a PC - save yourself some money and stability problems
