For the record, Rick corrected me today. The original DBX vcas apparently DO indeed sound better/different to the THAT vcas. I was refering to the 'gold can' vca which is often used in these builds, which in my opinion do not sound better than the THAT ic's.

the original dbx chip sound in ssl clones "different" not better
they are a bit harder to null andi guess not spec'd as well as the new that version so they probably actually sound worse !( err better)
only the early ( first 50 or so al smart c1 have the dbx chip ) he moved on to "thats" quite early but i have compare a new c1 with my c1 (serial number 11) - mine is more "ssly"
i am unsure which year SSL did the same swap , but it was cause the dbx chip stopped getting made at some point
