19" 6RU rack rails

Postby DwaneHollands » Sun Mar 28, 2010 6:21 pm

Not sure of the correct term for them. I'm wanting to make a 6RU wooden box out of timber and was wondering if there's a place I just buy rack strips that I screw into the insides of my box to mount my racks on. Ideally the ones with the circular tapped holes that you simply screw into.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

I got mine from Factory Sound in Melbourne, I ended up getting more than I needed but I'm going to eventually make a 7U wooden DIY rack from it.

The brand was Penn & Elcom and they are pretty good quality with pre-drilled holes to mount them also, I recommend them ;)

Actually, looking at the links in the post above they all look the same brand as the one I got.

I got an old 2m tall server rack for $1 from a local auction place. Had 8+ meters of heavy duty steel stripping in it ;)

Great Thanks Nick!

Hey Nick!

Thanks for the top info! I've just ordered from Pro Audio Stash.

The great thing is I can order the 6U strips already to size. So no cutting down. I'm going to make 3 x 6U boxes. Bought the captive nuts and bolts and those little washes to protect the rack face. Easy ordering process. About $80 all up include $28 freight. (got 40 nuts/bolts/washes)

I'm sure there is cheaper alternatives, but this is quick and easy and just what I need!

RustyO, Unfortunately no Ikea in Darwin. I couldn't see any information on them shipping interstate. Looks like it's just 'walk into a store to pick up your product'. I have found some nice timber which is 30mm thick and made up of different staggered lengths. Should like nice when it's finished.

Oh, I might buy some of those little rubber feet too! Be a nice finishing touch! Thanks for all the links Nick!

AFAIK Ikea don't do shipping at all. You can get purchases couried home for you, but no external ordering.
