Controller shmontroller...

Postby Chinagraf » Fri Mar 26, 2010 5:04 pm

Anyone know of something like the Euphonix MC mix for PC? I just want 8 faders in something small that looks cool. Like the Euphonix. Which doesn't work on PC. Unless you buy a Mac to control the PC.
Blah.
Any ideas? Not into the Mackie and the like. Can't find much.
Thanks

For Cubase 5. Faders, eq, plugins etc.. used a Euphonix in a place OS last week, loved it. Damn them. That's what I really want, mainly because of the way it looks. Hah.
I'm after something that looks a little more upmarket than the plastic stuff. I really like the inconspicuousity (is that word?) of the MC mix, just a slick little silver box with faders and a few knobs.

You could try JL Cooper stuff Andy. I've only used their software in the past not hardware, but they do a good job at what they do.

Try this.

It seems they have a lot of different controllers

Another alternative would be a Yamaha digital console, like the 01V96 for example. You can use it as a control surface via MIDI I think.

Didn't know JL did that sort of stuff. Most of the stuff I've found is big and mixer looking. I have an alphalink which is good because it's small, but it don't look so good..and I want 8 faders. 8 is enough..

If you can find one, maybe a Mackie Baby Hui?

I don't think hui will control my plugins like UAD2 will it? I'm almost leaning towards buying an old G4 ibook and using it as a server with the MC mix, if I can get more reports of it actually working.
Can pick up an Ibook for about $350, so if I can get an MC mix a little cheaper..

I second that
The euphonix is really good - been using one on and off for a year now
And the price is pretty reasonable too.

What's the fader control like Chris? Do the faders push and pull a bit in your fingers (motors?) or is it smooth gliding love? I've been umming and arrring for a while and waiting for the next thing. What's your overall review of specs?

It is not to dissimilar to Encore Flying Faders which I use a lot when mixing - Really I thought it is a great product - not sure how it compares with a Mackie,
I have been only using for faders and mutes so far. Not sure about the plug-in control access . Small - fits nicely in the middle of a console. Thumbs up!

SPDIF (Sony Phillips Digital Interconnect Format) carries stereo audio only, not control data.

A desk like an O1V or an O2R can be used as a fader surface for Tools etc via MIDI.

ahh i meant SMPTE

but even that doesn't make sense, was thinking about the fader automation on the O2R which syncs up with LTC timecode on tools or whatever.

ahh damn anyway my bad :P

Euphonix is Mac OS only.

SMPTE would be timecode, not controller data.

The 02R automation can be synced to either SMPTE or MTC, it sux as a controller I tried it once or twice, had really bad latency with the controls for some reason. Though the automation is pretty good, the mixer sounds heaps better with a good WC too.

Sorry for bringing this up again, but I've purchased an Euphonix MC Mix early this year and I must say am a bit disappointed with it. It's a lot better than mixing with a mouse, no doubt about it, but I was kinda used to a Pro Control and now I feel the MC Mix faders have too much of a toy-like feel, to the point of actually considering trying a Mackie or something. IMO there's also a lot to be improved for plugin control overall, the layouts sometimes seem to show up in random order (but I suspect that's more to the lack of a standard among developers). And yeah, I'm using the EuCon protocol, which is said to be so much better than HUI.
Anyways, my experience led me to a few questions:

> How does the MC Mix (using either EuCon) compare to Mackie's MCU (using HUI) in ProTools? Mackie's famous for it's general build quality, does that apply to the MCU as well? Is it worth sacrificing the EuCon (so called better than HUI) integration for a more robust controller?
> I found these JL Cooper controllers too, but have you seen the price tags?! An 8-fader module (MCS-3000X) is about US$2400! Well, enough to buy 2 MC Mixes, but are they really worth that much? Cool side of it I reckon is their software for customizing controls, but I'm not sure how well that works in PT.
> Is it reasonable to consider replacing faders on any controller like this? I mean, the faders on the MC Mix... seriously. It's not just the toy feel, but they're not very smooth, seem to be scratching or kinda stuck to something inside. You know that sensation when your old teacher started scratching on the chalkboard? It's the same when moving theses faders.

Cheers

A friend configured his iPad as a PT control surface - said it took a bit of fiddling but it works remotely.....
