GSSL with options

I am almost finished building another GSSL for myself, with Purusha case, Sifam meter, Turbo board and Super Sidechain board. My new business means that I won't have time to do much recording in the forseeable future, so I am thinking of completing it and putting it up for sale. Just curious if anyone might be interested in one?

What's the "good" VCA? I use THATS laser trimmed VCA's, but I could put DBX VCA's in there if it makes people think that it would be better. I still have a couple of days building and testing to do before it is finished, it is a lot of work to fit all of that into a Purusha case with the correct switch cutouts for the sidechain and Oxford controls because the rotary switches have to all be hand wired as the usual front panel PCB board cannot be used, the controls are closer together to fit it all onto the panel. It's worth it though because Purusha makes great looking cases, they look like factory. I guess that with all of the parts and labour and the Sifam and case it would owe me around $1600.00.

Sounds like your tech is not a recording engineer, the first two that I built had DBX in one and THATS in the other, and I could find no discenable difference, much less a "don't even bother" difference. Anyway, putting the DBX chips in is no big deal, you need a distortion meter to set them up though.

As for the price, well, using a properly drilled and screened case and the Turbo and Sidechain option boards puts the materials cost up a lot, the Sifam meter alone is over $100.00, but it has nice ballistics. I have an edge type meter on my Summit TLA 50 compressor and it absolutely sucks. Installing the option boards and extra wiring adds a huge amount of time to the build. As does cutting out the correct hole for the Sifam and making and installing a new meter scale. You can do one cheaper as a DIY with a home made case and a cheap edge meter to make the whole thing for under a grand though...

I second the irrelevance of DBX/THAT chips. I've used both units and either way gets the sound you are looking for. What IS important is the extra boards, sidechain and/or turbo. Not sure that you need both but if you have them I wouldn't be complaining.

I'm happy to be a third agreement. I have played with 202's and Thats in this circuit - no discenable difference (except the pretrimmed That's are easier to install).

Genuine PPM14 from switches plus is $180 AUD, and Sifam arent making them anymore so I have heard.

Oops, that's right, I forgot how much those Sifams cost.... Bought them last year. A lot to pay for a meter, but cheap meters are no fun to live with.
