WTB: AKG C414

Hi all, I'm pretty keen on buying a matched pair of 414s for recording pianos, acoustic guitars, string quartets etc, and was really hoping to get EBs but there doesn't seem to be a single one on eBay anywhere in the world let alone a matched pair. Anyone got a pair they want to sell? Or a tip off as to where I might find some?

What sort of price would I pay for a matched pair of EBs, with or without the brass capsule?

If not I'll just settle on the xls, which seem to be the best of the post-EB bunch by general consensus.


Also after a good condition akg d12, but they're much easier to find...

Thanks Myles, yeah I saw that but from what I've read about them, the TL version is not really my style... Got any opinions about the different models? I know it's a much discussed topic...

well I've got a pair of C414 EB's one with the ck12 and one without. I love them and use them everywhere even as a stereo pair. To be honest though I've enjoyed all the various incarnations of the 414 on the classic uses of them. Strings, piano, drum overheads, voice, and would happily reach for any of them for those roles. However I do find that the older units sound good when cared for and/or cleaned up and refurbed. If the mics are not well cared for or refurbed when you get them they will not sound good at all. Often the capsules are filthy and/or failing due to moisture etc. Choosing between a 414EB and a brand new 5 pattern 414 I would want to make very certain the EB was in great nick. Otherwise I'd go for the new every time.

And if you are reading what people say on GearSlutz, 90% of it is rubbish and the other 10% is doubtful. Lots of great albums have been made with the 414-tl and any other version of mic you can think of and if you've got a good option on a pair of 414's of any kind you're going to be able to make good recordings. Its really easy to get in to the "if I dont have that gear I can't do..." trap but its rubbish. And if you don't have the cash to buy something you want up front consider hiring it on the days you do. Lots of places will hire very good gear for reasonable prices and that saves you buying lots of expensive gear that sits in the cupboard most of the time.
