Yes, I feel for you guys. Lost a Marshall Head, Quad, and Les Paul back in 1990 and lots of other stuff too. Took me ages to build it all up to where I wanted it then all gone!! Hope you recover your stuff.

Friends, the crooks have been nabbed, the crime gang smashed and the good citizens of the northern suburbs can leave their possessions in unsecured areas once more! Big ups to preston cib and sen constable Dods (dodsy to his mates - ex pro musician mind you and current moonlighting jazz keyboardist) who have been just great. As of writing all property has been recovered except for one mic (senn 441 - I loved thee well). The gang have been responsible for a stack of break ins and I don't know what kind of heavy the police have applied but they sure are fessing up to a few.

So that's it folks, case solved & lessons learned. I am one lucky bastard. I guess it was a pretty good day for a few today.

peace out :D

After two days of feeling doomy I got my back up and after talking to a few people and doing a bit of reasoning I figured the stuff was going to turn up somewhere. One Sergent freaked me out a little saying if it was an Asian gang then the stuff could be on a container heading to Vietnam or similar within a few days. It was always worth having a look myself and something I didn't want to regret by thinking "maybe if I had had a look....".
So Tuesday night I staid up late finding images of all the equipment on the net then putting them into photoshop creating a 4 page full color document of all the stolen items. I figured people would better visually recognise equipment than if I handed them a list of meaningless model numbers. I also handed this document to the police.
I went out on Wednesday and eventually made my way to Northcote Cash Converters, the guy serving recognised the rnc compressor, brought it out from the back room, it still had my insert leads in it with my handwriting on a piece of electricians tape.
Called the cops, the crook had used his real license id, they had him on video, he had a record so he's identified (we don't know him). Later that night the Sen Const calls and they have located the guitars and amp at Glenroy - sold on the day of the crime which ties him to the burg. Thing is, Cash Converters enters all the stuff they sell on the day into an inventory which then goes to the cops data base, so stuff can be located that way.
Later that night I go to make a statement and just before I leave the roland and tc fx unit pops up at Epping.
Next day I continued my search, first stop the local at Greensborough (not a CCnverters) they have the avalons.
Sunday night I'm calculating how much smack you can buy with $700 and how long that would last and figure they might be on the nod for the a week, so maybe the other stuff hasn't been sold. The mics and Kawai were still identified at late arvo tuesday without being sold and since they want quick cash - hence using CConverters the chances were the stuff was still lying around, though that's not necessarily good news.
Went and picked up the stuff we had recovered at this point yesterday, got back with a message from the Sen Const, called him, they have the guy in custody. Ask him if he said where the mics were, Sen Const says he gave them an address. He calls again last night says they have it all bar one mic.

moral? - the law helps those who help themselves.

cheers, sk

Well, Victorian taxpayer dollars at work anyway... But seriously, I had a call earlier this week from a chap here in NSW who was looking at buying a used studio widget from a Cash Converters store in Melbourne. I'm presuming that CCs list their stuff on a website somewhere (I haven't bothered checking) otherwise I don't know how he would have been aware of this unit in Melbourne.

So, stuff from Cash Converter stores can disappear interstate which would make tracking it down just that much harder.

The inventory is not public, it gets sent straight to the vic police data base. I have heard stories of stuff being shipped interstate but CC's are a franchise with individual nominees, not sure how such an operation would be co-ordinated.

That is way cool! I'd just like to say that even though I don't know url, I'm mega pleased at this recovery. I thought it was all going to be gone for forever! Putting myself in his position I could nearly shed a tear. You lucky bastard!

i thought when you sold something second hand to a licenced dealer (say cash converters ) they had to get your licence then put ot on somekind of police register and hold it for a period before offering it for sale.

does this mean the police dont check the register unless they want to but if your persistant you can check it yourself ?

whats the point of big brother if you have to tell him what to do and where to look?

good result either way !

Here in Canberra they rarely check unless you see something of yours and report it.

I think it's evident that unless you put in some yards yourself the police aren't going to sit there scanning inventories for you and every other burg. An interesting aside to the burg was that the crim fessed up to another robbery at the uni in march, a pair of p.a speakers. When I was giving my statement the sen const asked if I was missing some speakers cause they were sold by the same guy to CC's. Said I wasn't. Then they got the guy and he fessed up to stealing them. Last week was sitting with a mate from the college next to my building tellng him this story and he says half in jest "so, you didn't find our speakers did you?" to which I said "yes!" - though up to that point I had no idea they were even missing some. So, these speakers have been sitting at CC's for 2 weeks and if they are sold off the floor then you have no chance of getting them back. The cops didn't match the speakers to the report even when they knew the crim had sold them so it's evident you really have to put in some leg work yourself in these cases. If I hadn't found the first item which got the ball rolling, (they did after all catch two guys, got confessions and links to other robbery's) then I might still be here yearning lost gear.

Rick, the answer is yes. Pawn shops and CC's take a 100 point id check then hold the items for 7 days before selling this is the critical time to find stuff.
