There's Nothing Like Australia....
Well, I know it's all just a matter of opinion and maybe a bit OT here, but I reckon that song in the new Tourism Australia ad is just simply a shocker.... Josh Abrahams produced the song. I'm sure he was amply rewarded, but surely he knew the whole approach was just going to cop a whole load of criticism? Maybe he felt the publicity was worth it?.... There, I feel better now.

Haven't heard it but not at all surprised. The agency is M&C Saatchi Sydney.
They did the "Where The Bloody Hell Are You" campaign. They're also responsible for killing the INXS song "By My Side" with NRMA insurance.

I recon it's fine.. I'm not Australian, and to be honest, thats how I perceived Australia before I moved over. lol.
Heck, have any of you watched flight of the conchords? See the Aussies in that.. classic!
It's not made for Australians right? It's made for the rest of the world.
Dutch wear clogs and have windmills and Tulips
Germans drink beer and eat schnitzel
New Zealand has lots of sheep and Kiwi's
Canada has bears and play ice hockey
America has lots of fast food and fat people
Switzerland has mountains and cheese and cute blondes.

I ws wondering who did that one. It is far from what I would say is Josh's bag, and he does his thing incredibly well, but the style of it is at polar opposites to what he has spent his whole life doing. As someone who deals with ad agencies regularly I will say this... I have no idea what he was up against as far as brief, client requests, account service politics etc... the final track can end up a long way from where you intended when you began.
I didn't know he was getting into jingles.....who isn't nowdays..?

From memory (which I admit is fuzzy for now) Josh did the Vodafone re-launch theme back in 2001/2002 (I wanna be connected), which was also created by M&C Saatchi Sydney. I cut all the animatics for it and they used Stereo MC's "Connected" song the whole time as a feel guide with a view to using it in the real ad.

When it came time to do the ads for real they couldn't get the rights to it so they had Josh (I think) create a sound alike version.
Trust me, there is huge, HUGE, money in these kind of gigs. INXS earned a bucket load from the NRMA ads, Roxette earned a fair amount from Kresta blinds back in the early 90's ("Kresta... you've got the look" campaign). You don't just get paid to make the track, you also get paid everytime they renew the contract and go for another x months with it on tv and radio. I just hope Garry Frost is getting some decent coin from that awful, awful AAMI insurance "What about me" ad.

The new ad is a complete rip off of this by the looks of it:

That's what they do. They take ideas from all over the place, like that video, and pitch the "feeling" or the idea to the client. They then make up their own song lyrics that relate to the message the client wants to convey and then they tweak it enough to make it "theirs". There is no originality with these guys. Every single "mood" reel or pitch to a client is the same, just with a different logo on the end. We would sift through dozens and dozens of films, music videos documentaries etc to find suitable footage or scenes to include in our animatics. I cut the same thing so many times over 5 years, just for different companies and the saddest thing is they actually get right off on what they're doing. They totally think they make "a difference", never mind that it's just crap that interrupts my favourite TV show and clogs my letter box or pops up on my browser while I'm trying to read the news on some website. I wish I had kept some of the pitch reels and animatics so I could show you exactly how much they do rip stuff off.

i worked in a post place for about a year that basically just did adds, got paid HEAPS won the coolest add award in the world for that kind gig and then quit !
no amount of money or booze can make you lie to yourself very well.
Real Add people have no problem with integrity or ethics or right or wrong , they are just not wired up that way , they are playing a hard game of chicken adds and what are the chances of getting it done by tommorrow if you work all night for me ?
your either cut out for that style of thinking or you not
i'm not
you should have seen the bosses face when i said , "nah i am not doing this anymore no more chicken adds for me , i am going back to rock and roll , it pays less, the girls are uglier , drugs are harder to get , nobody wins anything and its much more fun "
and i am still here folks , i dont think i have won anything since :)

For the record, quite a few Melbourne composers have been caused great distress by people asking if they did that ad. It was done by a company called Level Two Music (I think their composing side is now called Electric Dreams, just to be accurate) in Melbourne, who appear to not have access to a real piano or string players and may possibly own a Casio keyboard.
Credit where credit is due.....
