Large microphone boom stands??

Postby Mac » Mon Jul 19, 2010 5:14 pm

Hey all TRers,

Does anyone know who makes / sells those larger studio / stage boom mic stands for orchestral groups etc. here in Oz.

Do they have a technical name or something?? Cant turn up much on google.

Sick of drooping deca trees and gaffa taped aluminium tubing!! :)

the ones your looking at are made by atlas which are excellent ( i have some but always looking for more )
there are some cool new ones made by latchlake music and brought in by legacy audio in QLD i think
AEA do one as does manley

but what you are really seeking are the film scoring set jobbies made by mole richardson
there are the ones you see on the scoring stages etc
new your looking at $2000- 5000 but they turn up from time to time 2nd hand in lighting equipment sales pretty cheap
matter of fact they are really modified lighting stands and with that little bit of information you may do better in your googling

so they DO turn up cheap
if you can beat me to them :)

There is also the smaller SB11. I have one of those.

They sometimes show up and sell on the bay for $150. But.. awkward packaging and weight of the base for postage is a little silly.

I DIY'd a decca stand that I've used a few times with no problems. It involves a lighting (or speaker) stand, parts from an old clothes rack, a piece of dowel and a "T" bracket.
There's a bit of variable distance for the front mic if you want because of the telescopic arm of the clothes rack. :)

see the pic for further design flaws

..........a real work of art Ben. Glad to see the weight bags at the bottom of the stand. How do the recordings using your Decca Tree setup sound?

Hey Chris

I add another 5 spot mics for good measure but the decca is the main sound.
Sound is very spacial and has lots of flexibility with the spots. You can put up an A/B pair with this setup and get a great recording.

Oh.. and positioning is everything.

Thanks for the info everyone...

Ben, mine looks really similar - speaker stand, 35mm alluminium pipe and a diy custom top "t" piece for the mics.

Mine is a bit useless for swinging out like a boom though (only safe straight up).

..... i will just have to try and beat Rick to one on ebay.... :)

I dunno if this is any good to you - I've got two and they're good and weighty, can hold a big tube mic with ease...

I used some of the ABC's (ultimo) large stands manufactured by RCA recently... they don't make em like they used to.
strong, wheels, locking, counterweighted, and they made the best sound when you slid the different parts out.
I reckon you could hang a great white shark off one without much fuss

i think the name you're looking for is 'cathedral stands'. and as previously mentioned, you may well be better off looking for some lighting stands. Manfrotto, for example, will make something suitable. John Barry would also be a good place to look.
