Re: WTB: AKai mpc60 or Akai mpc2000
I'd prob not bother with a straight 2000. (Jump to the XL)
Hell, since buying my MPC1000 (S/H), and slapping JJOSXL on it, I can't understand why anyone would ever want a 2000, 2000XL etc.. the JJOSXL does EVERYTHING I could possibly want, is so nice to use, Intuative, and with up to 128Gb hardrive and 128mb of ram, easily enough room to put in all the stuff I could possibly want.
The Blue one's had / have issues with the pads, but you can buy upgrades to fix that, and you can use it as bargaining when buying one S/H.
(I guess the MPC2500 is in the same boat, but I've never had a play on em)
If it's about the sound.. yea.. MPC60 all the way.. or S950 / S900 /S700

Re: WTB: AKai mpc60 or Akai mpc2000
the 2000/2000xl is nice for its slightly expanded user interface over the more cut down1000, as well as the possibility of more outs if you have the expander board, but with all the extra features JJOS gives and the built in CF card reader I have to agree that the 1000 is a bit of a no brainer.
Personally, I went for the mpc3000 which is not actually much more to buy than a 60 at the moment, and then I put rohan mansell's vailixi upgrade into it. It's pretty limited feature wise compared to the 1000 with JJ os, or even the 2000xl (damn I wish it had a pad controlled track mute function!) but everything it does it does amazingly well, and it's just a rock solid part of my studio I don't have to worry about. Hard to explain, but like my friend peregrin says - when you play a pattern into the 3000 and set it to go round and round, it just sounds "right".
I still have my 2000xl with the fx board and output board and CF drive for compatibility with my friend Ed, but it's living in a roadcase under my mixing desk for pretty much everything except the occasional gig nowdays.

.
Ja, but the 1k has 3 Stereo outs + SPDIF = 8 dedicated outs if you wanna get picky.
Heck, but to still crap on about JJOSXL.. today I found out I can give labels to all my external midi sends from the MPC1k.. So, Say instead of MIDI CH1B, it's now Memorymoog.. 2B Minimoog, 1A Prophet5.. 2A is Yamaha CS-80. 3A is VCS3. . lol. (These are saved globally..)
The grid editing is a total dream to use... scrub back and forth, edit events from the keyboard etc.. genius. The ability to creat new tracks while everything is ticking along, without missing a beat is frigging awesome for jamming. No "Hey guys, can you stop and start please"
I'm 100% converted to the 1k.. (I'd go for the 2.5k but it's bigger, and I don't need all that extra baggage) It's improved my workflow, made writing solid beats and grooves a true joy & so quick and fast and fluid. bravo JJOS man from Japan wherever you are, I hope you spent my money on fast cars & hookers, you deserve it.
After playing with a MPC2000xl, I recon you'd have to have rocks for brains to pick that over a 1k...
But yea.. MPC60 does 'sound' good with it's chunky 12Bits of goodness..
Ok, I'll no longer hijack your thread.. just thinking of you and a stunted MPC2000xl.
Anyone got one to sell to this fine gentleman?

It sounds like mike is looking to sell an mpc1000 in the near future....
but to reinforce his rant, an mpc1000 with the modded OS is what I'd be buying if I was new to the mpc world too... I imagine akai are pretty unhappy with this turn out, where you don't need to spend 4x the money to get all the sequencer features of their bigger mpcs anymore - the 1000 was put out as the low budget starters toy, and designed to be very limited to write on, so people would then want to upgrade to a bigger one and use the more portable 1000 just for playback duties at gigs... now no need to have a bigger mpc to write on.

The 3000 with the Mansell upgrade is reputed to be as tight as it gets, clock-wise, according to the Innerclock website, i.e. ZERO sample deviation between beats. How does the 1000 w/ new OS compare, does anyone know?
(The 2K and 2kXL apparently are not as good in this department..)

Re: WTB: AKai mpc60 or Akai mpc2000
Take some panadol dude..
Basically,
a MPC3k is gonna cost you too much, and while good.. lacks important things like live "Mutes". Don't come up for sale often also.
A MPC-60 is rather rare, and sort after, sonically it's very cool, but does generally go quiet a few bucks due to DJ-Shadow wanna-be's. (Also, a very dated OS compared to modern MPC's)
Forget a 2K. - way too stunted.
A MPC2000xl, while quiet the staple for many years, is def getting very long in the tooth compared to modern equivalents. SCSI ! Yay, how quaint.
Well, you know how I feel about the 1K.. cheap, powerful, huge memory, USB, ra ra ra - I picked mine up for $600, and it was maxed out memory + HD.
MPC 2500 is similar OS wise to the 1k, but bigger, more outs ra ra ra. - another good buy.
MPC500 - THATS the Toy!
MPC4000 - 5000 etc.. big honkers.. looks like a spaceship. Not for me.
I'm a hardware guy, and have got plenty of old and cool sounding stuff, but for me, when you get to a sampler with CD quality audio.. then there is no longer some magical 'tone' involved and it becomes all about how well the machine performs / workflow.
Hope that helps?
Regards
Mike

I'm with Mike on the 1K. I have the 2500 too but i may sell it now -the only major advantage it has over the smaller 1K is for me is the numerical inputs. The JJOS makes the two machines pretty much identical though and i'm pairing down the size of the live gear so we can take it OS.
And yep, the JJOS is great

I first went standard JJOS = free.. thats good, not too shabby.
Then I payed for the next tier = better. (The biggest improvement for me was that when breaking up samples to 8ths / 16ths etc, stereo samples stayed stereo)
Then i went straight to JJOSXL = The best ever.. great workflow. The best thing is non-destructive chop, and the editing of sequences.. soooo good.

Re: WTB: AKai mpc60 or Akai mpc2000
Depends on what type of tracks you intend to make on the box and if you're on a nostalgia trip.
For lo- fi cracking beats you can't go past the sp1200.
The Roger linn Mpcs are cool and their timing is very tight if that is crucial to your music. Workflow will be streamlined with the modern units-Mike knows his way around a sequencer so I take his word.
The 2000 is not the popular machine with beat heads. Although any of them would be a good tool in their own right after you have the interface worked out.

Re: WTB: AKai mpc60 or Akai mpc2000
Just a little chime in to say I used to own the 2000XL, which was a pretty great machine, in it's own way, but the MPC-1000 I have now is certainly better on the workflow and I can't think of any features I miss on the older 2000XL, except that in some way the beige colour was cool and reminds me of our old "286" pre-Pentium computer we owned and played Kings Quest on back in 1987 or so/.
(:
They should make a limited run of the MPC-1000 in beige and I'd buy one. Especially if you could also run Digger and Alley Cat on it.
Killer.
Additional output board on the old AKAI gear used to cost nearly as much as the machines themselves.
I got a blue revision 1000 (w/ the 128MB AKAI RAM installed) from Preston Cash Converters for about $250 after I pointed out there were issues with the pads etc, and had it fixed up at Preston's ELECTRIC FACTORY (Akai's official service centre in VIC, I believe) for a good price - maybe $150 or 200 for pads, + installation + fixing some buttons as well.
Really, all the MPC's are fun in their own way, but the file management on the older ones is a bit tedious for me. Even the 2000 series, which need to be hooked up with internal drives / ZIP drives, etc for loading samples.
MPC1000 USB is very handy for quick transfer from software editing prog'z.

I have an MPC2000XL here for sale, PM me if interested.
Bought an MPC5000 a few weeks back, really enjoying it. Plasticy and tinny compared to the 2000XL though.
