ideas and comments for my next console?

hi there all. remember me and the missus were selling and moving on?

well, we've got a lovely space in xxxxxxxxxxx which we'll be moving into (hopefully) early july.

i'll have a main room as the live/control space, with future isolation space in garage on one side of the main room, and laundry on the other.

i'm starting to investigate a replacement for my dear old studiomaster V.

any one got any pointers on 16ch or (pref) 24 ch 8 bus consoles?
something needing a bit of love is ok, as long as it is more functioning than not!!
i just want to know what not to get . . .

well, i was kinda hoping to keep my studiomaster as a sidecar or location desk. sorry.

i briefly considered racking some of the channels, but that's all a toss compared to having a sweet desk with talkback, bussing and metering.
and its ancient roadcase fits in the car!

by why no juicy tales of smoking power supplies to avoid, or ear-licious consoles to look out for?

well, i've got time. no hurry. gotta actually move in, first.

Don't consider the Behr^%&ger 8 buss desks :-).

My opinion for what it's worth, starting from the lowest........:

Mackie 8 buss

S/craft Spirit Studio

S/craft Ghost

And if you want to wait for it's release and have money to spare the Toft ATB 8 buss console looks interesting, to say the least.

There are other options but I'll leave that up to others.

BTW, who are these TOFT people, that 16 ch. desk looks gorgeous.

Anyone have any clue as to how they will sound?

thanks for the tips, guys.

but i'm more feeling a trident/otari/mci/dynamix kind of vibe in what i do and how i like to do it.

something modular that i can swap trannies around and generally have some fun.
something with VU's.
something that vibes up with my black-box compressors and stuff.

going from my studiomaster, i don't see any benefit in mackie, soundcraft etc. it's just not my cup of tea.

aiming for a dual 8+2 setup - 8+2 channels at 24/96 in protools, and 1/2" 8 track with 1/4" stereo mixdown deck. sync the tape and protools when i need a higher track count.

keep it simple - it'll always be a 'home studio' even if there is a trident in the lounge room!!!!

Just in the process of recapping a dynamix. Very simple layout...interesting sound, perhaps a bit distorted in the lows but I'm going wait till its recapped to see. Pots & faders are a bit scratchy so going to try and clean them out after seeing how much faders are at f@rnell. My one is different to the d3000 so I may try and traceback the circuit after I recapp/clean/test/retension input xlrs/recapp power supply/add complete grounding :wink:

Hey Chris, I guy in Perth (not me) is selling a dynamix through mixmasters. Its a 16channel 8 buss one. I spoke to mixmasters to try and find out if it had transformers on the inputs....but it doesn't, like the one I got atm.

i'm looking at a soundcraft 1600, and a TAV scorpion. both 24 channels, TT patchbays and full looms.

soundcraft v.s TAC - please let me know what you think.



everglass - i doubt i could afford the mci. and by the sound of it, it might be a liittle too large for my needs (large one room space, doubling as lounge room)

the desk is a 16/8/2 (thats the model no)

its the first model they made i believe, pre scorpion etc. its designed by amek and i believe is way better than the scorpion and the matchless. the bullet is the better one.

i have been using this desk since 1991 ish. (It used to be a live desk and is roadcased)

it is a split console, 16 mic line ins, 8 groups, 8 tape retuens. 4 aux, simple talkback....and is PIN 3 HOT. i have never got arround to fixing this.
