Protools HD OMF export - Handle length?

Postby Chinagraf » Mon Sep 06, 2010 11:39 am

Hi Protools guys. With the wizzbang versions of PT, like HD or whichever it is now, are you able to adjust the handle length of clips when you export an OMF? If so could someone please tell me what the maximum handle length is?
When we record orchestra stuff at the ABC up the road we bring back OMF's but I'm trying to find a way to keep multiple takes as clip layers rather than having to peel them all off to their own tracks for the OMF export at the end of the sessions.
Thanks,

Andy

G'day Andy,

the handle lengths in PT arent long, they are more like max a few seconds, if not less (according to the last time i worked in PT, which was a while ago)

Im not sure what you mean by clip layers, but what you can do, and what i've done in the past for multiple take recordings is:

a) record using protools playlist functions, all your several diff takes on different playlists in PT.
b) comp a final take in the recording studio, just as a rough, or guide.
c) use the playlist naming system protools has defined to lay your tracks, using (insert at origin command in cubase)

this is shit, not very ideal, and the translation between different software re takes , needs to improve! i think it is a conspiracy by different software makers to create user loyalty, bastards!!!!

Handles would rarely apply in a musical setting. You're primarily using PT as a tape machine and in that case, what's on the 'tape' is all you need.

In post-production though, we would regularly digitise a 40 minute tape and only use maybe 30 seconds of it. The handles are there for the post mixer to be able to crossfade etc when mixing and only apply to the beginning and end of an audio 'clip'. They are user definable (out of Avid) and we usually use 75-100 frames.

You can't use OMF/AAF export for exporting playlists or take layers. Easiest way to do what you want is to take a copy of the entire PT session.

THanks guys. We are on Fairlights here, so Protools session is a no go. We record multiple takes but without TC offsets, so each take is a layer on top of the previous take. Then we have to peel each set of layers off to
their own tracks for omf export. I wish omf would do layers, it would make my life a lot easier.
I guess we'll have to keep doing it the way we have been.
Booooo.

Thanks

I wish all software would do layers, I was having the same trouble 10 years ago with my Mackie hdr as it did layers and it still is'nt implemented in most daws.
