New Mic - They're Finally Here -

Very glad it's back up for discussion. We need our own local supplier because it's silly shipping in big heavy mic stands that cost more in postage than it costs to buy the stand.

I'd be keen for a couple of stands providing they were priced below $500 each - all said and done.

I think the reason for the large boom stand is 50% safety for mics, 20% aesthetic and 30% reducing any vibrations from the floor and getting mics into places that normal stands won't go. In other words - keeping the base of the stand away from the source sound to reduce any extra vibrations. Also singers can swing their arms around freely underneath the mic etc....

Actually maybe that's 40% aesthetic... .......it makes micing instruments an occassion.

Ultimately you just want to lock the stand off & for the mic to stay there. I only have a Jade, I guess it must be lighter than the others in the range, but it stays happily on either an Atlas stand or extended out on a heavier Quiklok stand. The Quikloks are cheap for their size. They seem less durable than Atlas, but with care in the studio should last many years.

Gotta applaud Ben for quick turnaround on 'boutique' mics. I think I waited around 5 or 6 weeks during what must have been his busiest period (the EOFYS). Even then I was anxious to have spent money & have to wait to start getting a return on it. I couldn't be out of pocket two years no matter how good the mic (with mortgage & bills & all). Still hope the Lucas mics are well worth the wait for you guys though.

Thanks sounds like a challenge that i might have to take you up on. Our CNC's here could definitely make an amazing mic stand and we could probably Keep the prices fair too. What type of target price would you deem fair? Sorry if it is a blanket question but i have been out of the GMI scene as far as stands go for a few years now.

I don't see a way where you can go too cheap with the bigger mic stands. We sell the big Atlas caster models, but the RRP is from $6-800. Even with a hefty discount that's a lot of cash. And if you buy from a film / location equipment place, they're even more scary.
My compromise is Tama stands: about $100, and hold big mics extremely well, and reliably.

I made some stuff a couple of weekends ago, let me tell you a story.....

I was going to record some drums, the plan was that the kicks would be triggered so I figured it'd save a lot of spill if we just used kick pads and left the real kicks out of the room. Even the cheapest most flimsy crap kick pads retailed at around $100. They were awful wobbly bits of shit, even the expensive ones were unstable and felt cheap.

I went to my brother in law with a very basic idea for building stable pads. A quick sketch, $40 (steel, peizos, neoprene, hard rubber) and 3 hours work later, the sturdiest pair of kick pads you've ever seen....

So, maybe sturdy mic stands sell for $800, but the sure as shit aren't worth $800. Make some?

so the world has been working actively to get the lead OUT of everything and you have been saving it up and putting it in bags to stop your mic stands toppeling over ...? hand back your greens card me thinks

i really think its time to petition some local maker to have a really good look at the atlas and mic king stands and make a better cheaper local model for all guys in the land down under that believe there must be a better way to buy them


and lets not mention all the lead in fishing sinkers on the bottom of the oceans left to make its way up the food chain to anybody
in case they ban fishing with lead .. that will really piss me off ... i like lead sinkers.. they work

I think a few rounds of aluminium tubing and a couple of nice boom joints should do the job.

The banning of lead in Europe was almost an uncalculated disaster for some musical situations. Where will you find oodles of the stuff? Organ pipes! There was a stage where some regions/countries were advocating to rip out historical organs and trash them. I think a lot of influential folks got involved and made the Powers step back for a minute and use some nous. They won, making Europe to this day permanently musically carcinogenic (take that any way you like).

Today i took a few pics of the heavy duty muthas that my mate has.Very well made old school ones (with Neumans hanging off each one) Anutha mate is an engineer who does custom stainless steel balustrade work etc. He is having a look and preparing costings. Will let you all know sooner than my CS1 gets here........Peter's mic should be here any day now.......

Oh, and there is a fair bit of lead in the bottom of my boat too .......7 ingots....keeps her sitting in the water nice and steady. Always wear gloves when handling that stuff.

I'm hanging my go to mics off speakers stands with booms attached. I'd love a few latch lakes. But.......pricey....!!!

I have a couple of his Xtra booms for multiple micing. Very well made. Jeff Roberts products are excellent. Funnily enough, he has done all the metal work on the CS mics. I guess it's fitting we have this discussion. His latest Mic King stands have the same "Lucazite" processing that he has done for the mics. The quote goes" after the nuclear bomb only cockroaches and Latch Lake Mic stands will be left".

Still waiting for Oliver's shipping call. Any minute now......

Early days yet re costings etc. I just saw an opportunity for the local market and put it to him. He is looking at it seriously but will only go ahead once he is sure there is enough room to make an honest profit at a selling price thats better than whats on offer from the equivalent offshore products available at the moment. I will definitley keep you informed as soon as i have news.

Another thing to consider is look for an old fan stand - the huge ones on wheels - these are a great starting point for a heavy duty mic stand base - if you can manufacture the clamp section.
