Guitar amp replacement speaker ideas

so i bought this Epiphone Valve Standard recently, coz it was cheap and apparently very mod-able. and it's not bad out of the box, bit dull sounding and the gain is all wrong, but that's ok i can work on that.

anyway, i just replaced the stock speaker with a celestion sidewinder S12-150, big improvement, i can definitely see this going somewhere. anyway, i want to put the celestion back in the ampeg it belongs in.... i don't have a huge amount of experience with guitar speakers, so i'm looking for advice on a permanent replacement.

would something like a celestion 30 watt greenback (G12M?) be the best choice? again, excuse my ignorance regarding what's available. any other recommendations?

if i had to describe the tone i was after..... ummm, something that sounds like a really good guitar amp. i'll be using it live, more overdrive than clean.

Go for an Alnico. An old Rola would be one option. Another would be a Lorantz. Take the amp to Mike's factory in Dandenong and he will suggest his best option.
Or you can get celestion speakers and most other things re valve amps from here at Retro Sound :

old rola's are great and there are a few other aussie brands from the 50-60's that sound good too. cheap on ebay...

cool... actually i did have an old rola and a jensen and i gave them away in exchange for some work on my hammond! but yeah there's a few out there - will go hunting!

Is it the Class A 15 Watter??
An old Celestion Greenback or Vintage 30 would be nice - alternatively, the more modern M25 Greenback might also suit..

yep its the 15 watt class A... good little amp but needs a little help to be really good. i think the greenback is probably the one for the job.

i am a massive fan of the celestion alnico blue speakers.
a friend of mine has a vox cab with a greenback in it, and after comparing a few heads through both i quite like the alnico blues.
they are very smooth and sexy, also they are only 15 watts and i have always found speaker and amp combinations where wattage is close if not the same tends to sound best for what i want. i have never had so many compliments about tone as when i started using the alnico blues.
worth demoing in a shop sometime anyway

my friend just bought this 15w class A amp by a company called phaez for maybe 200 bucks, i cant believe how amazing it sounds through my cab with the alnico blue. small amps seem to be the way to go! i may just have to sell my 100w plexi unless i get that stadium gig in the next few months.
