Emails with a lunatic? Selling stuff on ebay...

Postby genevievemaynard » Sun Sep 19, 2010 4:09 am

In July I closed my studio and started selling off gear on ebay, and privately. I listed my 2" machine and was contacted by a guy called Chris who then contacted me again about my Soundcraft console.

Somehow things went pear-shaped in Chris's brain, and the email correspondence makes amusing reading...

So if you want a bit of a laugh, head to

Forgetting all that other stuff for a moment, just from the first two e-mails alone you can tell this guy is a little off the rails, I mean who does that kind of thing like in his first e-mail?!

But I will say this much, as trustworthy as I'm sure you are, and I hope I don't offend you by saying this, but honestly I wouldn't be keen to do a deal with anyone involving a long term payment plan to someone I've never met who is overseas either. It does make it somewhat of a logistical nightmare, even if it does go off without a hitch. And from my own experience, keeping deals as simple as you can is a good rule of thumb to avoid bad experiences.

However the way the guy responded and kept going on about you selling your reel to reel to your boyfriend is frankly, a bit strange - given he just pulled it from nowhere.

Ah well, and I thought eBay was bad - seriously though good luck with the sale, lets hope you find a better buyer! :)

The guy is obviously a major nutbag, but I can see that after his Africa wig-out he has somehow connected you being with "Alex, the guy I sold the otari to" and "in South Africa with my partner"

Part of his brain has done a simple copy and paste edit with reality and the other bit doesn't like the remix...

=))

woah, there's some pretty awesome jumps of logic!
The worst I've ever got from ebay was plain old deadbeat bidders.

I wonder how much money he lost to the nigerian scammers?

I can actually see where he has mistakenly thought you sold the Otari to your boyfriend and are now living with him (he missed some punctuation marks). Does that make me a weirdo?
P.S. please check out my clip on youtube.

There is something particularly compelling when it dawns on you that you are dealing with a person of unsound mind in the realms of a professional context when it is unexpected, and sometimes you dig away to suddenly realize you are luxuriating in "Schadenfreude".

This guy obviously watched "District 9" one time too many.

Ugh.. what a tool. That sucks you had to go through that.
I recently got called a Nazi by an ebay seller for politely asking if a postage quote was correct. There are some strange folks out there.

Wow....just wow.
As a rule of thumb now, I put 1/20th the effort into replying to emails with poor punctuation and no capital letters. Add spelling mistakes into that, and the classic I CAN'T FIND MY CAPS LOCK KEY, and you pretty much know from the get go they are mad as a hatter.

hmm
I cant spell or punctuate very well
so i just make up words that sound like something I am talking about .
This guy that has the trouble with african women would definitely have "flickerty eyes"

Now according to those that know there is no such word as flickerty
but i bet he has them all the same :)

You may think that but you both know the meaning of punctuate and how to spell it! That already puts you a long way ahead in my books. I'm pretty sure our 'flickerty eyes' friend isn't too sure of that word.
And it seems you've mastered the paragraph aswell. :p

Any chance of the youtube link???? or do I have to list something on ebay to get that??

(I know - I could list an Otari tape machine, that I just brought back from Africa, having split up with my girlfriend..... that'd fry his brain!!)

Yeah, it was this bit...

I’m in South Africa now for the next couple of months though. With Alex, who bought the Otari...

Easy to mentally arrange to:

Especially easy when your own spelling and punctuation is, um, lacking.

Good read, though. TBH I get where he is coming from, you just would have thought that if he concluded the deal wasn't kosher (rightly or wrongly), he would have said so once and walked away, not start raving like a person with one too many cats.
