Shure m67 mods and results

So for watching his kids for 10 minutes on saturday rick gave me one of these Shure m67 microphone mixers. I took it home and plugged it in, and even by talking into a 57 and listening on headphones I could tell the pres sounded pretty reasonable. Problem being they all get mixed together...

So today at the workshop while I probably should have been doing other things I popped the hood for a look. Typical 70's build... lots of greencaps... looks pretty tidy! Schematic was easy to find because as far as I can tell they made like 50 bajillion of these things. So I worked out where the pres go into the mixer section and re-routed them to direct outs on the back. There was enough useless connections on the rear for me not to have to drill any new holes... this is good, metal work is annoying.

I left the last pre (number 4) in the mixer section, so the fourth pre now has extra gain and can kind of be driven by leaving the output down and the input up.

Results? I don't mind these things... they have a kind of pronounced midrange that I can see working on guitars and some drums... awesome!

or you could use it for blending 4 mics into one like its designed to do
at that price i reckon you could use it to keep your flat door open in the summer heat to let a breeze in as well
next time you near it post the front panel as well.
it could be a GREAT workshop tool for testing microphones as well

Yeah I could use it got what it was designed for but what fun would that be?!?!?

Which brings me to my next plan... I'm going to make them switchable between the mixer and the direct outs...

Absolutely... You'd just need to add phantom power which is no big deal. Wait hang on... Pretty much all my studio gear is just used to test other gear

.........adding phantom power is a pain! Just buy or make an external phantom power supply.
My 2c but i'm shure there are alternate points of view.

Good call Chris, it certainly can be a PITA!

There's an australian guy who sells a phantom supply PCB and I've got a tiny little power transformer. Theres a space inside the box I've got my eye on to fit it all, but I haven't measured yet so chances are it won't fit.

If it doesn't fit, we're going external.

That or I'll just use these pres on dynamics and ribbons...

I have one external phantom power supply for 4 mics and another for two. Gets me out of the odd problematic situation for live recording esp when connecting with the FOH. Often they don't use my recording condensers for FOH and most of my racked pre's don't have phantom eg the optro's.

AKG do a good 4 channel phantom unit. But you should just make your own. Doesn't Joe M have something in his shop?
