New Mic - They're Finally Here -
Moderators: rick, Mark Bassett
Re: New Mic
Without going back over the thread, I recall Ben was going to donate one of his mics to a charity of our choosing if the CS-1 sounded "better" than one of his Mics. If that is still on the cards, if the CS-1's "wins", then lets auction the Mic and donate the proceedings to Kristian.
Just a thought......

Re: New Mic
If a shootout happens to go down, I can contribute some original oldies but goodies, if any shootout participants are interested.C12,C24,etc (Pending their availability on the day).
I am interested in hearing the CS1.The capsule from MBHO, arguably one of the best capsule makers under the sun ATM, is a sonic piece of bliss. It sounds tremendous in David Bocks 251.I would like to see if "Lucas" was able to achieve as much justice for this capsule with their circuit and tube choice as David has.
Oh, Angus how did that U67 turn out up there?
Have a great day Lads!

That'd be great Mike. I have the Bock251 and it's stellar. I too am keen to see how it compares. Apart from the capsule the circuit and transformer are entirely different. Soon, all will be revealed.

Ben M wrote:ooo one more thing. You guys must have a pre of choice in mind for running "precious" through (you've had time to contemplate). What is the first point of contact? Just out of interest.
I'll just go with what i've got in the pre dept. The silver Optro's of course are on the menu as is the Audek desk pre's, and the Amek 9098. I will also give the Byer 77 pre a try. On vox i suppose Comps will be either the AWA , Avalon 747, or the Ueri LA4. That should keep feisty little "precious" suitably under control.

Re: New Mic
Angus,
Its worth the wait to have the mic operating with its original NU67 supply.Didn't your mate check the complete mic system when it was handed over?
The vintage mic market is, sadly, full of con artists and sharks.Big freakin great whites
I know of the guy you got the system from, he's okay.
It is always safer to hook up a cash on pick up,inspection with the purchase of older valuable mics. Most times not always possible due to offers and cheap, take a leap of faith deals existing in far off lands!
Best of luck with the Neumann, Angus.

Re: New Mic
I''d like to offer my rooms as a testing ground. I've got a reasonable sized live room ( 35sqm) , a 20 sqm Vocal room. & Large Control room that can accommodate up to 12 people plus a foyer area. All rooms are isolated & treated. I've got Tannoy Arden, SRM 10b & NS10 monitors. The mics include U67,U87, AT 4050 & Schoeps. The mic pre's are Quad Eight mm71, Shadow Hills Gama, TAB V72 & Brooks transformer-less custom pre. I'd love to hear some other flavors &/or colours. Any interest?

Re: New Mic
Thanks for the offer Jim. Very generous. Not sure where we are up to with the listening day. Stay tuned.
Here they are.......
Absolutely gorgeous. Pictures cannot do the finish any justice. Very weighty. Solid. Love the swivel mount. Jeff Roberts has done great with the metalwork. I've not seen a finish like it before.
Looking forward to running them through their paces.
Phew. we made it.......

Re: New Mic - They're Finally Here -
Recorded some acoustic guitar last night. Rough and didn't have much time.
True cardiod is a monster, Enormous bottom end. Too close really needs a high pass.Way too much proximity effect in the normal placement. Needed to move it back twice the usual distance. This far back has the advantage of not requiring pop filters and muso's who move around a lot.One click away towards omni or fig eight and it behaved in the more traditional sense. 2 clicks towards fig eight was magic on acoustic. I'll try some Blumlein when I have the chance, however my room is too dead to be effective. I killed my room with auralex.
In a rough a/b with a KM84 it smoked it. Running both through a 1073 without eq. The cs-1 sounded finished. Too easy.
I'd love to try a great room with piano. I recon the bottom depth would be stunning on piano. I suspect low strings would too.
I hummed a few bars but just didn't have the time last night for any vocals.
I need a bit more time with it, however early signs are very promising.
Cheers

Just sung a few vocals. Wow, stellar. I'm impressed. Also listening back to the guitar from last night and it's all there. The change of polar patterns is like a different mic. I can see this will be very versatile.
You voice over guys would love this. I can even sound like Barry White only with bigger balls.
Cheers

Lol Chris!
I'm with Jamil, I thought that monster cable and the like, was all just snake oil.
I have heard a difference with some cables going into my marshall JMP1 guitar preamp. We've got these cables that are meant to be noiseless. They are supposed to have a capacitor or something in there to "maintain correct capacitence". You can pull them out without making a noise, so they're handing for quick changeovers. But man did it kill my tone! I lost harmonic saturation and top end and quite a bit of gain! (I'm talking about a high gain sound). I mean it just made everything ugly. But apparently I was the only one to notice. I keep getting told that there is no change and that it's the correct capacitence. Not only can I hear it, I can feel it choking my playing. I mean, I have more fun with a 5 watt practice amp, then my marshal rig with that cable!
I must admit, now that I use a Fender Hot Rod Deville (something like that - 2 x 12 combo), I can't tell the difference on that amp. The bottom end is so floppy and it's so lacking in harmonic overtones that the cable issue is a moot point. (I can't believe how floppy the bottom end is!)
Does anyone know the cable I'm talking about? (they have red connectors or highlights)

hmmm. Their black predominantly and I'm pretty sure they're not monster. (sorry, I just realised that my rant didn't specify that these were different from monster cables). The shape is quite similar though.
Actually the cable has a metal collar about 5mm deep, and 5mm thick that slides over the jack. Once you push the jack into the guitar, the sleeve receeds back into the cable assembly. (the silver thingy, in the picture). Once it's pushed back into the silver thingy, it engages the signal.
